I really love working around computers and anything electrical, and I like the idea of being able to work around this type of stuff but I dont know if I would rather be an ET or an IT..which would be more interesting and challenging for me..also Im in Trig/Analy about to graduate high school...what else should I do to prepare for ET/IT than that? also for IT Ive taking all courses of like the web classes, drafting, design, etc. at my school..i love the ocean and the CG is where I think would be the best place to enlist.
Please fill me in better on some info about these topics... Thanks |

Hi from a fellow ET 1 from a bit far back in time.1969/1977 I was a CG ET and just missed making Chief ET by getting out.8 years was a lot at 27.12 more I could have retired at 38.
From what I read these days advancement as high as I went is harder though the experience is outstanding.Land or Sea you do good things for yourself and our country. Money for school when you get out too I believe is still good so do it while you are young. Sea LOL the World. Myself I did and had my own HDTV Plasma you name it repair shop for 30 years after I got out in 1977. IT,ET, do both and more but as I have read posts here advancement in rank is the most disappointing. Look around and see. Good Luck. A better more personal service is not out there. Semper Paratus. Be always ready. You have to go out but you don't have to come back but you will. Don |

I came in set on being an ET. Truthfully being an ET on a 378 ft cutter, you have to work on some of the IT systems anyway. As an ET you can be a Navigational technician or a Communications technician. I would recommend doing both Nav and Comms and get the schools you can. There is also something called an FT that deals with the ships weapons systems (so you could be an ET AND work on guns at the same time
I would recommend talking to a recruiter to find out more about each rate, they can show you the brochure and explain a little further in depth as to the demands of each job. A HUGE recommendation would be that you go into a field that will establish a good money paying career on the outside incase you decide to get out. Electronics and Computers are ever evolving. You sound very smart and driven, so whatever you decide will be beneficial to you. If you would like to call and talk more about each rate I would be more than happy to help, and I could get you an IT to talk with as well. 510-437-3456 ET2 Wells. Good luck in your decision. |

Where do you expect to find "combat" if not in a war zone? |

How about in Downtown Detroit? There is an ESD Detroit, I do believe. But you won't get Combat pay; maybe Hazard pay. |
