I am doing research on the USS Ranger CVA-61 during her 1965/66 Combat Tour to 'Nam for a project I'm working on. Hopefully someone here can point me in the right direction.
USS Ranger was on station at Pt. Dixie in the So. China Sea on 16 JAN 1966 What ships were with her at that time?
I have the following which are confirmed
USS England DLG-22, USS Carpenter DD-825
USS Sproston DD-577 standing plane guard.
What others? How many?

Thanks,
Eddie

Hi
I cant help you with ship names.
I may help with some clairification on some of what you said.
There were 2 operating areas off Viet Nam.
Yankee station and Dixie station. As the names imply Yankee station was in the north and Dixie station was in the south.
I was there in 69 and 71 on Kitty Hawk. I cannot speak for what Ranger did in 66 but our operations were on Yankee station in the north.

There is a web site where you can go and get declassified ship histories. This site lists only ships currently commisioned. While Ranger will not be there (decommisioned) those histories exist and are somewhere available.
Maybe at the Ranger Assn web site

Thanks Shockey,
I've been researching the Ranger for quite awhile and her actions in Vietnam. She had been on both Yankee Station & Dixie. I have the Ships History but, it does not show any info on what ships were with her.

I'll check the Ranger sites again. Thanks,
Eddie

Perhaps her "deck logs" for that date will provide the info you seek.

Copies of those 'logs' can be purchased.

Here is more info on getting copies of the 'logs' in question.

I'm not sure if the ships historys I'm talking about are the same as what your talking about.
sometime in the past the Navy had the ships turn in every year a report of events for that year for that ship.
They include significent events such as arrivial in port dates, depart from port dates.
Lost aircraft, ships that come alongside for unrep's, ships that come alongside to take on fuel. The carriers often gave fuel to their escorts.
These reports are available for ships in commishon at The Naval History Center. They got a section for decommishioned ships also but they seem way behind in getting them up.
Ranger alas is not up yet. Look up Kitty Hawk 1969 under currently commishioned to see what they look like (I made that cruse)
A small tidbit about ranger.
Theres a Star Trek movie where they go back in time to get some whales. Part of the film has Sulu and Uhura go to the USS Enterprise at Alameda. All those ship scenes are aboroad the Ranger at North Island. The gangway has a sign that says USS enterprise. ON the other side it says USS Ranger.
I was there I saw it first hand.

The "Deck Logs" are at MUCH more detailed record of ships activity. In those 'logs' are some of the things you mention in the 'history' report that ships are suppose to send in every year. Heck most of that 'history report' is taken from the 'deck logs'.

For example, while underway, the 'deck logs' are suppose to contain EVERY speed change, course chance, ships in company with you, station in any type screen, when doing various unreps, vertreps and from whom,etc.,etc.

On my DD-692 website we purchased EVERY 'deck log' she had, from commissioning to decommissioning, almost 14000 pages and have 'highlights' from those 'deck logs' posted on the website and have ALL of the 'deck logs' on CD,for ready reference, and or purchase by DD-692 crewmembers.

So what I am saying is that if the 'deck logs' for the Ranger were filled in correctly, then the 'deck log' for the date in question can be purchased, which should show who all was in company with the Ranger on the date and time in question by the OP.
However I do recommend getting the 'deck logs' for at least one day before and one day after the date you are really researching.

Interesting about the Star Trek shots! I'm a Trekkie & have seen the movie. Will look for that sign sometime.

As for the History report, What I got on Ranger was from the NHC a couple yrs ago which is as you mentioned but, does not list the other ships.

Boats,
I just received the deck logs for 15-17 JAN 1966
from NARA. I forgotten I had sent them a letter & I am suprised to learn what all the deck logs consist of! Seems the USS Carpenter and USS Sproston were dispatched for SAR when Chuck's RA-5C went into the drink.
I now have the coordinancew of the mishap as well.

I have done extensive research at the Naval Historical Center. You should contact the Operational Archives Branch and get a copy of the U.S. 7th Fleet command history for the year(s) that you are doing on the U.S.S. Ranger. I do have the carrier battle group deployments from January 1976 to current date.
