I also remember WELL when I crossed the 1st time, and then i did it again 7 more times on different ships. The first time I crossed the line was on July 4th, 1976 while assigned to USS CAPODANNO (FF-1093) while she was the Flag ship of COMMANDER, MIDDLE EAST FORCE in the IO. A great day. The last time I crossed the line was while assigned to USS AYLWIN. I was in charge of the days (3 days) events I retired soon after that, I miss little things like that. The best thing I remember the most about crossing the line was I was behind the XO< he was a WOG at the time, he tryed his best about getting out of the crossing, he was the XO, the CO, CDR R.D.FREY said you to shall have fun (or words to that effect), so the load was off me and on to him. Today, the XO is now a Vice Admiral, William T. Shiffer.
I guess that makes me a Bi-Centennial Shell Back, I know of only 1 left in the Navy today that also crossed the line that day, He is a MCPO on the JFK. There were less that 300 Bi-Centennial Shell Backs in the Navy. A Great day
Recently became a SHELLBACK myself, on the USCGC DALLAS (WHEC-716) on 10 March 2001. I have my certificate hung on the wall in my house, something I seem to always answer questions about. One Problem...I never received my card. I have a blank one from the publishing company, bit I am unsure how to "format“: it correctly. I do know that no one else on the DALLAS had a card made, I think it is something the ships command would normally do, but in any event I would hate to be stopped by a fellow SHELLBACK and not have my card. Any one know the proper format, e-mail on thins would be appreciated.
BECAME A SHELLBACK IN 1980 (IRAN HOSTAGE CRISIS) ABOARD THE USS EISENHOWER (CVN 69).
ALSO BECAME A BLUE NOSE IN 1981. (SAILED THROUGH THE ARCTIC CIRCLE)

I became a shellback on the USS Antietam in 1992. I will never forget how they had us on our hands and knees yelling for Flipper while they soaked us with sea water and beat us with sections of fire hose. LOL
