I have recently finished college and am an RN with specialization in ER and pediatrics. My husband is in the army. I have several questions about get a job with military hospitals.
1) How hard is it to get a job. i know there is a shortage of nurses in the civilian world is it the same on post?
2) how hard is it to work overseas? We are headed to germany after our next depolyment.

If anyone can help with these question or add any other advice i would be very grateful. Thank you so much!

1) I've never seen civilian nurses in the Naval hospitals I've been in - they were all Navy personnel.

2) I don't believe you would be eligible to work in a German hospital.

Try the usa jobs website. I know there were several clinical nurse positions posted in my area. I don't know anything about Germany, as I have never been overseas.

the only civilians(nurses and doctors) I saw in the hospital in Yokosuka were Japanese nationals, most of them on their clinical rotation or Interning.

you would definitely NOT be allowed to work on the economy OCONUS, that is against SOFA( can't take jobs away from the locals.)

Mustang is right, it depends on the SOFA for the country you are located in.

Not sure of army regs as I am new, but there are plenty of civilians working here at Tripler Honolulu, which would be considered overseas..plenty. My hubby is a nurse (army) there

Hi - my wife is a Navy OB/GYN and I am a civilian ER doctor working in the military facility that she works in (Ft. Belvoir). I don't know about Germany -- my suggestion is to contact their department chief -- he/she would know.

As for in CONUS, your options are 1) GS or 2) contract. Contract pays alot better, but if you're willing to stay in for along time, GS has better benefits, etc. If your spouse is active duty however, you probably don't need benefits at all.

Either way, the head nurse of each department would have the local contact info for both hiring as GS and/or by contract company.

I use to work in the ER at Camp Lejeune Naval Hospital and there were "civilian" nurses working there. But they were hired thru an agency that paid them and did all the benifits. I know in Okinawa you can work in the base clinics and hospital, but I don't know what you have to do there to apply. When you get to Germany see if they have medical facilities on base and are able to work for them. Don't know what the money is like. Good Luck.
