I will need a job once I wed and get moved out of my parents home. I am pretty much game for anything, but I prefer office (clerical/administrative) work or possibly trying something at home. I know it's a long-shot, but I was wondering if there are any jobs on base for Navy wives?

Also, how does one qualify for portable job training and how much does it cost if you choose to do that?

There is everything ranging from fast food (McDonalds) to Government worker. For Gov't workers it can take time and skills to get the job there is no guarantee you will. There is places like the Navy Exchange, Commissary, Child Care, MWR, etc.. that you can apply for but again no guarantee you will get the job. You can also look out in town for jobs that are available at the time. I have done everything from temp work to video store to online research.

Be careful with those at home jobs if it is a thing like Pampered Chef, Partylite, etc.. they can be difficult at times to book parties especially if there is one person doing it on every block.

There are also contractor jobs-jobs doing everything from IT to healthcare working for companies that contract with the military to provide services-however-like Navywife said-whether you get jobs or not will depend on your qualifications and a number of other factors.

Thank you. I had mistakenly thought that most of the workers (even at McDonald's etc.) on the bases were military personnel who were not out to sea at the time. This really clears up things for me.

McDonalds/Burger King are not part of the government it is a private company. So the people who work there are not government employees, they are employees with the company. Just like banks of base, Starbucks, etc...

Oh...duh. Guess I should have thought of that, but didn't.

I have heard that military bases are often times (depending on the base) a lot like a small city within themselves. Is this true? And if so what other types of stores are located within them?

Yes, it is. There's the PX/BX of course, the commissary (grocery store), banks (usually credit unions), optical shops, bowling alleys, movie theaters, hotels, child care facilities, etc. Very little of it is actually retail, but there are lots of places that have civilian employees, assuming that there are vacant positions.

PX/BX I've seen this a couple of times before. What does it stand for?

On a Navy base it's just the Exchange. Think of a small WalMart or Target.

Yup yup, and then I don't know if it's the same for other branches, but we also have mini malls and shopettes - they're more like gas stations - but like, 7-11 because they have paper towels, baby needs, outdoor supplies, etc.

If you are looking for something you can do from home, that will be completely portable, I could recommend a company email address, it's

no links

They train you in sales and they have great support.
It's just a suggestion but I thought their website was good and had videos on it to tell you about it.
