Ok, I need to know who I can turn to on post to help me with an unemployment appeal. I was working for the DOD at one post and then my spouse got orders to another post...within the same state, 150 miles apart.
Unfortunatly I've been denied benefits. I have a college degree and have been doing xray's for 8 years. I have applied for 36 jobs and have not got 1 call. I've lower my standards and applied for housekeeping jobs, cashier jobs, and much as medical office jobs. Still nothing. This has put my family in financial hurt.
My question is, who can I have help me from the military, and how can I prove that the unemployment insurance is in place for such occations as mine? Thanks for all advice.

the military has nothing to do with it.. it's all based on the state's unemployment laws. if they consider it a choice that you quit your other job, then you are stuck.

were you a GS employee, or just a contractor?

I'm in KY. I was a GS employee. And because my spouse didn't get orders to ANOTHER state, KY won't grant me benefits, regardless. But..if we had moved out of state....I would have been granted the benefits? Doesn't make sense to me and I just want to help in my last chance appeal! Thanks.

Did you just quit or did you try to transfer your position?

The way I understand it is this...if you have career status you can try to transfer and if no jobs are available you can go on LWOP (Leave Without Pay) but you have to keep "renewing it" until you find another job in order to keep your career status.

Someone at the CPO should be able to help you with that.

Good luck

KY provides UI to military spouses that move on military orders.

I moved before within state on military orders and I got unemployment no questions asked. I was not a federal employee though. Can you consult legal on base or something? Sounds like you should be eligible, or they should assist you with transferring you job or something. Sorry you are dealing with this.

Yes..I have been on LWOP since Aug. I was told I could transfer...then when I got here...the story changed. I've done all I know to do to try and resolve this. I can neither get another job nor get benefits. This has placed my family in a financial situation. From the way the legislature reads, I should be qualified and awarded the benefits of unemployment insurance. I just don't get it. Running out of options and lost about what to do. Thanks for the advice though.

Unfortunately the Unemployment Compensation Guide is outdated (2000). I searched the Kentucky Codes and it looks like the House Bill (HB) to extend benefits to spouses in your situation didn't become law. Tata H gave good advice: you should check with legal. You can also check with the employment coordinator at ACS. I did find an article on the Warner Robins AF site that GA is one of the few states that does extend benefits to spouses -- when their husbands are transferred out of state. I know this doesn't help you now but should you find yourselves PCSing from GA you'll be in good hands. Best wishes
