My husband is a 2nd class and has been in a little over 2 years..we were told that i can use his gi bill to go back to college and get my associates...then they had some kind of meeting on the ship with someone to talk about gi bills and education..and they told him that i can not use his gi bill unless he is on shore duty..which wont happen for another few years and i want to have a more stable career by then..full time jobs arent going to cut if for much longer...i would like to start my career..and he supports me 100%...but i have a friend who uses her husbands gi bill and takes online classes she said they went to personal and got some kind of form and then the navy printed out a sheet with a bunch of online schools she could take...is this true?and what are my options?
currently,no the Navy has not made it possible to transfer the GI Bill. there is a new Bill that has passed Congressional scrutiny, but again, no plans as yet to actually implement it.
It is extremely doubtful that your friend is using her DH's GI Bill. currently only a certain few ARMY MOSs allow that..and you must be an E6, re enlist for 4 years and forfeit the SRB in order to do so.
Are you sure it's use of his GI Bill and not any of these or this?
Generally speaking, military.com's advice is to speak with the servicemember's retention counselor as a lot of this is still very touch and go because it's such a new benefit, and there are a lot of specific circumstances/requirements that must be met. We're having a hard time pinning down information on it for that reason, so it would really be best to go straight to the source.
Minnesota and Wisconsin have a seperate state GI bill then the federal one. I know that they can be transfered to a spouse. I don't know if other states have them and what there policey is on a dependant using them.

I found a podcast on the main page about the new G.I. Bill but it mentioned nothing about spouses or dependents.
It doesn't make sense to me that you would have to forfeit your bonus for your spouse or dependent to use your G.I. Bill. Why not just take the bonus, pay for your dependent's or spouse's education and you still get to keep your G.I. Bill for your own education. I don't get it.
