Has anyone on here ever written one? I know they are composed while in graduate school, but I would like to include one in my application to graduate school. I know it grows in lenght throughout your academic career. I have googled some to, just wanted to know if anyone has written one and how was it well received.

I’ve never written one and don’t intend to.
Maybe this can help you decide. Best of luck. . . . . Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV)? What's the difference between a resume and a CV? The primary differences are the length, the content and the purpose. A resume is a one or two page summary of your skills, experience and education. A goal of resume writing is to be brief and concise since, at best, the resume reader will spend a minute or so reviewing your qualifications. A Curriculum Vitae, commonly referred to as CV, is a longer (two or more pages), more detailed synopsis. It includes a summary of your educational and academic backgrounds as well as teaching and research experience, publications, presentations, awards, honors, affiliations and other details. When to Use a CV In the United States a Curriculum Vitae is used primarily when applying for international, academic, education, scientific or research positions or when applying for fellowships or grants. As with a resume, you may need different versions of a CV for different type of positions. |

I have not published any of my research, but my CV includes papers I've presented at conferences, research studies I have participated in, panels I've presented on, academic awards and fellowships, professional memberships and committees/boards I've participated on, and all levels of teaching I've done, including specific curricula that I have developed and grants I've successfully written. I also have a section that includes a synopsis of my master's thesis, and a synopsis of my PhD dissertation research.
Depending on how well you can fill your CV before attending grad school, it may be wise to submit a resume' instead. My first CV was pretty thin and I didn't feel confident in offering that as a representation of my academic and career accomplishments at that point (before grad school) but was very confident in a traditional academic resume' I do have peers with extensive academic experience coming out of their bachelor's programs -- political internships, legal experience, community organizing, grant writing, and publications -- that serve the purpose for their grad school applications better than the jobs they would include in a typical resume. (working at places that have relatively little to do with your intended career and/or academic path do not serve well in the application process) So, it depends upon the type of experience you have - especially academic - as you make your way toward grad school. Really, what you are trying to prove with a CV at admission to grad school is that you are prepared for the rigors of academic research and professional challenge. It also depends on the type of school to which you wish to apply -- different criteria for more selective programs might look at a well-rounded CV as a definite asset. |

Thanks for the information.
I guess I am trying to stay ahead of the game. I have my internship, peer advising, research studies..that is about it. |

An easy approach to this would be to look at CVs of other people. Usually, if you go to any university's website, you can find descriptions of professors and see a copy of their CVs. Generally, a CV has the structure of: Identifying information (name, address, email); educational history; professional/work history; professional affiliations (organizations, professional societies); publication; professional presentations.
You can always do a google search for CV and see what comes up and use the structure of what you find as a guideline. |
