Today I went to see about Devry University. I am wonder if anyone from here has gone to this school and have any opinions on it? I am looking to get my BS in in either multimedia web design or computer information systems. I ma not sure yet what I would major yet but I have narrowed to these programs of interest. Also I am wondering what other schools I should look into that would offer these programs. One thing that kinda gets me about devry is that they want me to take the next up coming class but I do not have all of my documents especially my ged transcript which said it will take a month for them to send it. I just want to make sure that this is a good school and that I won't be wasting my time. Thanks for any information that you can help provide for me.

Be VERY careful with DeVry in making sure you have the time to devote to the classes required. We lost $750 to them because my hubs wasn't able to access the web when he was in Germany for 2 weeks. They kicked him out of the class and we got shafted on the bill and the GI Bill.

I wasn't too impressed with DeVry though...not just because of what happened, but just because of the limited classes and junk.
Do a LOT of research for online schools before choosing one. Smile

Are there no universities in your local area that you could attend classes at?

Many schools around military communities work with the military and spouses by offering night/weekend classes and many online classes so that you can continue with your education even if you move out of the area.

You should also check out schools at your base education center. Many schools such as univ of maryland, webster, etc have offices on base and you can continue your education even if your spouse is reassigned.

I agree with the others about being careful about DeVry - not every for-profit school is bad, but their reputation is probably about the same as University of Phoenix (some think its good, some don't).

I am sure they gave you the hard sell - your admissions rep is trying to get you to sign up before you change your mind - if they wait for your paperwork, you may decide to go somewhere else.

Definitely check around like RCC said. Esp with CIS, you could probably find a program to compare to DeVry in terms of cost and quality so you can make a more informed decision.

It obviously works for some people, and there are lots of DeVrys around so one would hope your credits could transfer from one to the other (but do they transfer to a regionally accredited institution?), but if I were you I would not let them pressure me before I explored my options.

Go to the base education office and see what info they can give you. And dig around on your own to see what else is available in your area. I once went to a base ed office and they only gave me info on the programs/schools available through them, as if the rest of the programs at one of the local colleges did not exist, so definitely go beyond the ed office to make sure all of your bases are covered.

Also, depending on what core classes you have already taken, you can do your cores (English, Calculus, History...) at a local community college or state school, and transfer them into a CIS program. You might even be able to find a distance CIS program that you could use (UMUC has a lot of distance programs, and Park is another college that contracts with military bases).

I was planning on taking most of my courses at the campus in Chesapeake, Va. There are a lot of other colleges and universities in my area. There is Old Dominion Univeristy, Tidewater community college, ecpi is a technical school I think they have a way bigger campus than Devry. What got me when I went to visit Devry they are located in a set of business parks. There was few classrooms and 2 room with a computer lab with maybe 30 computers in each room. What is getting me about them they are pushing so hard to get me to go to the next class. That part bothers me somewhat, I feel like I am being pressured into buying a car or something. Usually when I get this pressured I run away from it. I am thinking about checking into online classes as well but I think I would like to check out St.Leo University, Florida Tech online, and maybe a few others before I commit myself to Devry.

My Dad's wife used to work for ECPI as an instructor and now is some sort of counselor or coordinator or something for ODU for their eastern shore campus, I think, at least the last time I talked to them about it (she's a grad student getting her PhD so I really don't know if she even works for ODU anymore). I don't get to talk to them much (obviously!).

I'd check out ECPI for sure. I remember her saying there were a lot of students there that already had degrees in things like liberal arts and were going back to get technical proficiency and certification (and some of her students were graduating and making more money than she was as an instructor).

I taught at Keller Graduate School for two semesters. That is now the graduate school for DeVry University (and was associated with them even then). I walked away after those two semesters because of the attitude toward education. The school did not seem interested in educating students but, rather, in getting their money and handing out A's. Even when I loosened up my definition of a "correct" answer to be "it's correct if you get a few keywords" and expanding the numeric range of grades so that a B- was low 70s, I was still being told that I was grading too hard and giving out too many C, D and F grades. I actually had to write justification for an F even though I caught the student cheating (and this was after I went through the exam and answers the class sesssion before the test).

If I see DeVry or Keller on a resume, unless there is substantial experience after that, I usually just throw the resume away.

I'm not telling you not to attend DeVry but am merely presenting my point of view as an educator.

I think I am going to run away from Devry. I really didn't like the high pressure I got from them and also I have looked on other message boards, the school doesn't sound like a good idea for me. Thanks alot everybody for your replies, I think I will take a look at ecpi and other schools.

My husband's getting started with his education as well, and we did some research into ECPI - the actual brick & mortar locations have won some awards. Google any mostly online school you're interested in plus "wiki" ... it's a good way to get a lot of unbiased info. University of Phoenix, for example, has "Controversy" has part of the Table of Contents - not something I'm looking for in a school (just my personal opinion).

Don't be afraid to look at your schools in your hometown (or wherever you are). So many "real" schools (with physical locations) have online programs now. I'm doing an Associate's through one of the community colleges back home, so I didn't even have to worry about sending military orders for in-state tuition requirements - my driver's license # was all I needed. Lots of 4 year schools, even public ones (which is FAR cheaper than private ones like University of Phoenix & ECPI, even when you add in technology fees for online classes ... for example, at ECU online I can pay just $100/credit hour compared to $250+ at private schools) now have fully online programs. Any testing that you need to have done for placement, etc., can usually be done at your local military education center or a local school in town. Luckily with today's technology there's a ton of options!

I agree with the others regarding Devry/Keller. Be careful. My hubby applied for their Master's program and they would not accept transfer credits from the college that he recently graduated from because they were not regionally accredited. (Even though they were nationally accredited.)We went to one of their open houses and it was like a cult. Spooky.

Good luck!
