Just wondering if any of you spouses have experienced or heard about a potential employera not hiring a Mil spouse because the constant PCSing nature of being married to the military.
My wife will have her Master's degree and it crossed my mind that she'll be looking for jobs that usually are more "permanent" positions and thought about the possible reluctance of an employer to hire her.
I am responsible for hiring people within my organization. Granted, we work for the military, so we understand the life more, but it is absolutely illegal for anyone to NOT hire your wife strictly because she has moved around a lot. There are other occupations that move a lot as well.
I know what I look for in a resume is relevant experience and education. I rarely even look to see where it was that they worked, and again, that could be because I am actually looking to hire military spouses, as they generally have the qualifications that we are looking for in our specific program.
There are times as well that an employer is only looking to hire someone for a few years that can "clean up" a mess left behind by someone else, so they may not mind as much. Either way, the employer is not supposed to worry about whether or not a military spouse will move away in a couple years. I've been at my current locations for 9 years, and it doesn't look like I'll be moving any time soon!
While it's true that employers are prevented from not hiring someone because of their military status (including if they're a spouse or not), this doesn't literally stop them from not hiring you for this reason. They can literally say they found someone else who was more qualified and don't have to prove this (plus, in reality how could they?). I cannot tell you the number of resumes and applications I've put in, in just ONE year. I've literally put in hundreds of resumes and applications and have only gotten 2 calls for an interview. I have over 15 years of experience in Management and Administration but can only get a job working PT at WalMart. I can't even get a job at the bottom in the field I have experience in, so just because employers aren't supposed to NOT hire you because they know you'll be moving sooner or later doesn't stop them from not even considering you for positions that you're clearly qualified for.
