I am recently married to a soldier stationed at Ft. Riley and if you to are in Kansas in the Manhattan/Junction City area I think you know as much as I do there is really NOTHING for work. I have a few skills, been working as a Designer for most of my life though.

Question to Ft. Riley spouses. What is the longest commute you do? There are tons of jobs I can take on but closest area is Kansas City and that is one big commute :/

I might try Topeka but so far not much out there. I wonder if there is any type of carpool for people who do long commutes that might be listed somewhere? Suggestions are much welcomed! I am relocating around April 10th from NYC.

From someone who lives in KS now, whose husbands entire family is from here, you're going to be hard-pressed to find design work out there. It's not the big-city you're used to, about everything is agriculture-based. The students at KU call Manhattan "aggieville", if that's any indication.

Either try to find a different line of work than design (there are jobs in that area, I've been offered a few. go through USA jobs), go to school, or dont leave NYC

We were stationed at Ft. Riley from 2005 until we PCSed to Kentucky last May 2008, and I can tell you that the closest place I was able to find decent work was in Topeka. I have a bachelor's and master's level degree, so my only real options in the Junction City/Manhattan area were K-State or the post. As we all know, it is next to impossible to get picked-up on army posts unless you have an inside track, and K-State never had anything in my area of experience. I would count on a commute to at least Topeka if you really really want to work.
