Just a note on Military.com's info for Nevada tuition. Military.com states that NV does not charge tuition to military members or their spouses while stationed in NV. However, NV charges what it calls "fees" to state residents per credit (they call what they charge non-state residents "tuition") so basically military members are charged the in-state resident rate. It could be misconstrued as "free classes" but classes are not free.

All schools charge fees and fees are quite often more than tuition. Case in point, I was talking to someone in the Joining the Military forum who was going to a state school. His tuition was about $4000 per semester but his total fees and tuition (without dorm) was about $8500. Another case, I was talking to somebody else in the Joining the Military forum who needs 15 hours of college credit. The tuition at his local CC was "reasonable" but that institution charges some type of fee at the rate of $5 for every credit hour. I don't remember what the fee was but it is something you can't get away from and there was no cap. Where tuition is usually capped at 12 hours (at least for public institutions and was at that one), that fee just kept being added on so 21 hours resulted in an additional $105.

Schools do this on purpose so they can advertise how low their tuition is in comparison to other institutions.

Education is not free. Maybe you misunderstood the information. Virginia has adopted the ruling that allows military spouses to qualify for in-state tuition which saves a huge amount of money.

I just applied and was accepted for this today. All you have to do is show your spouses orders, your military ID, and proof of residency in the state. It cut my tuition bill more than half.

Check out the colleges in your state. They may be doing the same thing.
