My husband and I transfer in a little over two months and I am having no luck finding a job. I use all the basics for searching... USAJobs.com, My.spouse.military.com, Craigslist.com, Monster.com, FloridaToday.com, etc...
We are transferring to the Cape Canaveral area. I have an Associates degree in Business with a major in Real Estate. I have always managed the Office of Real Estate agents never sold (I never wanted to always dreamed of designing/building houses). I was doing personal Real Estate agent marketing and then the market tanked and I was forced to look elsewhere. I currently work for a Software company that develops chemical management systems in New Hampshire as a Customer Service Manager. Any one have any suggestions of where else to look?

So why not take the chance to get your Architectural degree?

I would love to. Between the cost and number of years required to obtain a degree in Architecture I get a little discouraged. I have truly thought about if for sometime now.

Look into what programs are offered at the community colleges and other colleges in that area. You might be able to start and it could be a reasonable cost.

All the accredited Architecture Programs are not in the location we will be transferring to and I have not found any online accredited courses available.

What about FIT? It's in Melbourne (not too far from the Cape at all) and they have a construction Engineering and Civil Engineering (or are you strictly looking at Arch?). Even for an Arch degree, you'll need Calc, physics and Statics at a minimum, and you can at least knock those out and they transfer normally as well (because they are lower level....well, sometimes statics doesn't). Could actually probably get those done through Brevard County community college

FIT is fully accredited. My dad got his Electrical Engineering degree there (and belonged to a frat, but that's another story). He worked full time at Harris while he went to school, and I went to his graduation.

Looking through there, they even have Auto cad and drafting AS's (autocad is a computer program that I think sucks, but you'll need to learn it at some point. Others can make it work better than I can). At least it's closer to what you want in the end.

Thank you all for the helpful information!!

Catherine, I will definitely be looking into FIT and what they offer. I have honestly been consider a major life change. My husband has been very supportive and I am even considering Nursing or Paralegal. I really want to help people. Smile

My biggest concern right now has still got to be finding employment. I really want to continue my education but I need to help support our family too.

I'm sure everyone's hearts are in the right place with the "go back to school" suggestions but I sense that you economically need to work.

I would go to the local school district. See if you can get on as a sub - teaching or office staff both have sub lists. It would give you some money until something else comes up.

Good luck

I said what I said for multiple reasons, one of which is that economic downturns are the best time to go back to school, actually. You ride it out and come out on the other side (hopefully) with a much more solid basis for a career that can easily survive downturns. I have quite a few guys in my engineering classes right now that are in school for this reason. Even in downturns engineers are always needed, and they know that.

Plus, they're upping the Pell grant limit.

Catherine I know this is a bit off topic but I just wanted to commend you on choosing engineering. It is a tough program but it will pay off for you. I looked into programs just because so long ago I wanted to study it and you are inspiring. I found a (partial - 1-2 wk summer labs are required) distance program. My husband actually was in an engineering program for 2 yrs in college before he joined the AF so I have told him about the distance program at the ND school of mines. Just wanted to thank you for sending my mind down that path. I don't know if he will pursue it, and I probably wont (something about getting a second BS feels like backtracking - I know it shouldn't), but at least it is something to think about.
