Can anyone tell me about a website or a place to go to find money for college? I really really want to go back to college, my dd is finally old enough and is in school full time. Now is the perfect time to go back. However, I can't afford to pay too much outta pocket so can anyone point me in the right direction as far as where to start looking or who to ask about any type of financial aid or grants, scholarships anything. I already applied for FAFSFA or whatever its called is there anything else out there? Thanks for any kind of info I can get.

go to yahoo and type in college scholarships, it should give you several websites to look at. There is some scholarships & grants out there for military dependents but it can depend on where he has been, etc...

Look at doing a community college as well sometimes they are cheaper to do the basics. If you are OCONUS I know that NMCRS does have a program where it pays around $400 a semester for classes for those spouses that qualify.

i've never signed up for a scholarship... i'm only on a grant right now. ^_^ they have scholarships for retired vets and spouses as well as active soldiers and spouses... so be sure to ask around in the school for that. ^^

Stateside Spouse Education Assistance Program
www.aerhq.org - click on Scholarship Programs - deadline March 3!!!

Ft. Stewart's Officers' Spounses' Club and Enlisted Spouses' Clubs both offers scholarships and you do not have to be a member - ask around on your base - our Frontline newspaper has been posting information lately - most scholarship deadlines are in the Spring and are awarded for the Fall

Check the Army Ed Center, Army Community Services, and the Family Readiness Center if you have them on your base

Libraries are a great source of information and carry scholarship directories (typically they do not check out but it's worth spending a few hours in the library)

Check with your school's financial aid to see what resources they have - some schools offer scholarships to their students

Check your major's professional association website and see if they offer student scholarships

Ask your instructors and your major and the department head

National Military Family Association Joanne Holbrook Patton Military Spouse Scholarship Program
www.nmfa.org
Deadline 3/15

I wouldn't trust a general "college scholarship" search in google. Mustang00 is right about that.

I earned $4000 ($1000/year) for filling out a scholarship application - by hand - and in triplicate. I think what helped me is that I was willing to put in the time to complete the application. I was tempted to not bother because I didn't want to fill out the same information 3 times but it was worth it in the end. I think it took me 2 hours so I basically earned $2000/hour!!! Think of it that way and it is sooo worth the effort!

Good luck!

Hey TMK5,

I just realized you're in GA. You are both eligible for the HOPE Grant at your local technical college which will pay for your core courses. http://www.columbustech.edu/financial-aid/hope.htm
www.gacollege411.org It also gives you a $100/qtr. book stipend. You can then transfer to a state school. If you want more information contact your local technical college or email me off-list.

Take care.

The HOPE grant was awesome. I used it when dh was at Moody AFB.

I already had a bachelors degree but needed technical education to make myself marketable. It is definitely worth taking advantage of if you have any need whatsoever for technical education. Just make sure if you want the core stuff to transfer you take classes that have an equivalent at the state college level.

Thanks ladies for all the info. But here's my problem, I'm temperarly in Wa state for the 6 to 8 month due to my mothers health. I want to start school here and than transfer back to ga right before my hubby gets back from this deployment. I went and talked to a guidance counselor and he pretty much blew me off cause the programs he offered me were for e5s and below. So yeah, that kind of sucked. But thanks ladies for all the info, I'll keep looking, but it looks like I'll have to pay outta pocket what I can if I wanna go back to college. Thanks again.

There are grants available to help with tuition. There are financial aid options that can be paid back once you are done with your education. I work with University of Phoenix and most of our students are on financial aid to attend school.

If you are planning on relocating I know our school is nation wide so there will not be the issue with transfering credits. There are others that fit in this category as well. This is helpful with military because losing credits that are already taken is not the most cost effective or time effective.

Let me know if I can be of any help.
