My husband is active duty and we just received orders for next duty station. He will be attending NPS in Monterey, but first has a final deployment with his current squadron before he is to report in June 2009 (so, this is about 6 months lead time for me in terms of selling the house and looking for a new job, etc. while he is deployed). Ideally we will move mid-May to be settled in by June 1st...is it too soon for me to begin applying to open positions? As difficult as it has been, I am trying to build a career and put my degrees to use - I have managed at least 2 years at past employers and would be looking for a mid-management type position. Any advice for a cross-country job search would be appreciated.
Monterey is heavy in the tourism and convention scene. there are one or two convention centers there with the associated related industries. there is also the wine business. Both wineries themselves and the retail/tasting room aspect.
as for big business: not so much. couple of colleges in town. and of course medical practices.
in other words: WHAT have you managed? can you tailor your resume to appeal to these industries?
Thanks for the info and tips about industry...I am admittedly in a bit of a niche arena - I have an advanced degree in urban planning and so far have focused on neighborhood revitalization planning and housing development - managing development of project plans, community relations, and all financing aspects of new development. There are a few positions currently posted (which is why I ask if 6 months out is too early to apply). Since the communities are small, I figure they won't look to do any mass recruiting/hiring. I guess I could always look for marking/PR positions or community liaison type jobs if nothing in my field is available or fund raising for nonprofit groups if there are any around. Thanks again.
hmm.. well Ft Ord is still in the 'clean up the assorted debris from war games before we can turn the rest of the base over to the local government' stage.
and Salinas is trying to lose the gang image by cleaning up the town....
oooooooh how I loathe the Monterey area. Lets just say I moved here from the Chicago area, and boy do I crave the big city again. I've been looking for work since about November, and I haven't gotten a single call back yet. I worked for three years as an IT technician, and I have my masters in guidance counseling...so I've been spreading myself all over the place applying for everything under the sun and nadda.
If you speak spanish though that will be an enormous perk. I don't recommend applying for anything that is relying on state funds. Anything government related, including education, is in a lot of trouble in this state. They've put hiring freezes on everything. Its a touristy small area. There isn't much industry for real jobs. And you'd be suprised if you go into the schools here...houses that cost half a million dollars easily, and the most ghetto schools I've ever seen in my life. Thank God I don't have children, cause there's no way in hell I'd send them to these schools. Over forty kids in classrooms and teachers making maybe 35k with a masters on the coast.
*cough* end monterey rant *cough* We leave in eight months. I can't freaking wait!
