Hey everyone! We finally have our orders set and are heading out to Millington, TN in 4 weeks! I am having to quit my job here in Southern CA to move for the orders - I know CA has the unemployment law that if I have to move for military, I can receive unemployment, though I'm not sure about TN.

My question is: Do I need to file before I leave CA (only 3 days between my last day at work and when we hit the road)
OR - do I file when I get to Tennessee?

Thank you soooo much for you input! This is my first major move and there are so many unanswered questions!

I know all states are different but they all basically follow the same rules. You would file with the state you left, so CA in your case. Unless your income for the last 5 quarters were in two different states. Then you would file in the state you were going to and they collect the right portions from both states. To qualify for unemployment you have to be ready and able for work, ie tomorrow. So that would mean you would have to wait until you are in TN, with an address and phone number. ( My DH already had housing when I followed so I already had a permanent address) An address at billeting would probably work, but Im just guessing.

A friend of mine filed after she left but while she was visiting family in route. They paid her but then researched it and found out what actual day she arrived at their new PDS and took back the money they paid her for the leave time. I dont know how they figured it out, but they did.

When I filed i didnt have to give them my husband's orders. A lady just called me and interviewed me and asked questions like when I left when I arrived. When my last date of work was, etc.

Hope this helps. I would definately check out California's unemployments website , like 12631440 said, it might answer a lot of your questions. I do know most states have a seperate department for claims filed for people who moved out of state.
