I grew up in CA, and have been all around the country during and after my Navy term. One thing I have learned is that jobs in ANY bay area are few and far between. In another month or two I will be moving near DLI to be with my wife and am concerned about work for myself. I currently work for Petco, and know there is one in Monterey so, with the support of every management member in my entire region, I know my job is very transferable, but I would like to know if it's hard to find other work. The recruiter told my wife that spouses are guaranteed jobs on base, but it sounds like BS to me. I wasn't married when I was in the Navy, so I don't know for sure, but it just sounds like recruiter mumbo-jumbo.
This is all very important because we are also snake breeders, so we can't live on base. That means we'll have to find a rental, and THAT means we'll probably have to pay on the higher end since most landlords would rather rent to someone with dogs, and let the carpet get covered in urine, than rent to people with snakes, who are in escape-proof containers and cannot POSSIBLY harm a single square inch of their rental unit. It doesn't make sense at all, but it is a fact.
So, just in case I need to find a job that pays more, how hard will it be?

Thanks in advance,

~Jason

GOod for you. That'd be a lot of jobs they'd have to not only come up with but pay for. I guess they could kick some of the contractors out, but how many spouses are engineers?

You can get spouse preference, but the jobs on base may not pay better than the company you already work with (assuming they let you transfer your time).

a BIG military friendly place( I swear one of the pre requisites is you must have a spouse at DLI or NPS) is Taste of Monterey on Cannery Row,. flexible hours and the best view of the bay on the Row. plus you get to drink wine ON THE JOB!!!!! Ken and company are great people to work with and for. Had I even the vaguest desire to work, I would have worked there. as it was I spent every single Friday afternoon there drinking and munching on cheese platters.

be advised that renting is expensive even if you didn't have pets. and most places are smaller..summer vacation size homes. at least the available ones are. pretty sure Clint isn't going to rent his place in Carmel out.

Well, I got some great news yesterday. The General Manager of the Monterey Petco said she will make room for me to transfer when I need to go! I was so concerned that, with so few available jobs, I might find my transfer impossible, expecting all positions to be filled. Alas, I was wrong! I will be able to transfer my title, time, and pay, and not be unemployed for even a minute!
I know this was a sort of senseless post, I just am so excited I had to spout!!!
