Hey there. My husband and I just transferred here to Virginia Beach and I am currently on the job hunt. I have been trying to get on with civil services for the past 3 years with no luck. I have been told it's all about who you know and getting your name out there. I was just wondering if anyone could help me in any way. I am dying without a job and have been desperately searching with no luck!! If anyone could please help me it would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks so much!!
Quite honestly the Hampton Roads area sucks when it comes to job hunting. There is a huge amount of turnover however due to there being so many military bases in this area. Many agencies, including City and State, are actually putting on a hiring freeze..........again.
However seasonal jobs are becoming available although they are usually just temporary. You have to keep trying before you land a stable job. It took me several years before I got one in the area. The best place to search is the online newspaper (The Virginian-Pilot/Career Connection) or Zeider's website which hires civilians for military bases like FFSCs. Do NOT use Craigs list!!! They are full of scams since they are free to post ads and don't require any legitimacy to post anything.
You just have to keep trying. Eventually something will come available, even if it's not really what you're looking for. Taking on a crappy job just to help pay bills while you're looking for something else is better than nothing at all. Keep at it and something will come along.
