Dilition: Did MEPS do the card and lantern test on you for color blind? If not you need to talk to your recruiter and have him get you the other test. As a non-rate(E-2/E-3) you will probably be going to a cutter being you can not serve at a Sar station. Current wait for DC school is 12-18 month after putting your name on the list. You can add name to list with qualifying a-school score after 6 months as E-2 or 4 months as an E-4. I would recommend DC as the best rate for a color blind person but what do I know as an MK. Good luck with any choice you make. The guard is a good place. MK1-Recruiter

yeah he pulled the colorblind cards on me ( the recruiter ) and I'm colorblind. What do non-rates do? so right after boot camp I'm automatically non-rate? when and how do I move up to an E2, E3,E4, etc? The only way I can become a damage control is by going to A school?

A school is not the only way to make DC3, you can "strike" it also. That's just on the job training to complete all the requirements. I'm on a big white boat and I've had 2 guys, who were both colorblind, strike and make 3rd class within 8months to a year.
If you are eligibile for school, i would suggest going. There you will learn the right way to do things. Out in the fleet we all have our little tricks we use and pass along. In school, there are no tricks. It's also a very good time.
Good luck
