I would like to solicit how the Coast Guard and the DC Rate has helped you on the outside. For me it was instantaneous people wanted to hire me because I was a DC. I now have a BA degree going for a Masters and hopefully running for political office. Respect to all DC's.

Smile Hmmm..what the hey..suppose i,ll chime in.

I knew this one dc3 dublin off the sweetgum who sold cleaning products after the CoastGuard but he did,nt retire he just got out.

I also knew a DC1 Combs off the sassafrass who did retire not in hawaii but in mobile..last i heard he was bug man.

As for myself i am a retired FS1 and i operate heavy equitment for a small city in florida..

Odd how everyone in the CoastGuard seems to believe what you do in the CoastGuard limits you to do those same things outside the CoastGuard...

If i decide to stay working after this city retirement...i may go back to cooking..or lately i,ve been thinking of selling cars..wow who knew ..there was other things to do for me than paperwork and chasing eggs??

I can't seem to get anyone to look at my resume twice after listing DC and discribing what I did. About all they ask is why I got out, disabled seems to put them off even though I can do most work still.
The DC training works great for doing side jobs though, can do just about any small repairs.

I have tried, I feel like I'm in the wrong area to be trying to start up. The only thing I have not done is public advertizing. Posted at the local Baptist church, local Pagan community & web pages, gay bars and events, shamelessly told Autozone customers what I could do. So far I have wracked up a whopping $135 from that in 2 years. Recently let go from Autozone for not being able to stand for 8 hours a day.

That sounds like discrimination.

Hey there. Just found this thread. I was a DC back in the 80's. Got out in '84 and went to work as a union carpenter. The rating and military experience helped clear the way to get into the union, as you will always come across a "good old boy" that wants to help former military member. Good money, but hard work. Now own my own small remodeling company.
