OK, here's a thread that's sure to provide hours of entertainment for ourselves and others...

In my forthcoming novel (in final revision) a "resistance" movement must coordinate its covert activities directed against the enemies of the USA and the US Constitution at home and abroad. These peeps do NOT - repeat - do NOT - act with the blessing of the US gov. They are considered terrorists, although they are terrorists with heart (insert touchy/feely movie trailer music here).

In the 2028 environment I create, the US Gov has established a Global Information Grid (GIG) that records EVERYTHING, and CASH has been ABOLISHED so that every legitimate transaction creates a record within "the System" (the nickname for the omnipresent GIG and its data feeds).

How dey in dat RESISTANCE gonna communicate?

My theory is robust digital encrypt in general plus one-time key encrypt for sensitive text msg.

Ideas? Feedback? I'm nuts and should go smear myself with feces and run naked into the Montana wilderness? Lemme kno.

Ok, just so I understand the constraints...

GIG has absorbed the phone system too? So everyone is VOIP or something? How much info do they need to send to communicate messages? Pages? Pics? Small amounts of text?

Are they doing data drops? Or do they need to communicate over distance? How technical are they? How unhappy is the Govt with them..i.e. how much firepower are they going to bring to bear to do the SIGINT work?

GIG is into everything and cross-references everything, telephone, video (you see dat ATM camera? GOTCHA!), satelite images, EVERYTHING. Oh yeah, most everybody got a ID chip on 'em too, so GIG gets location updates for everybody too...

Make any assumptions you want. Dis is fiction. If it don't work, I change it.

I foresee need for pics, small text, long text, large multi-media files, etc.

Resistance are EXTREMELY techno oriented (many of them) and have ability to hijack satellites given extreme need. Ending of first book in series is op where all boradcasts are pirated and resistance propoganda du jour is broadcast on every freq via airwaves and sat

Not being very techno savvy myself dis is gonna be a challenge for me 2 comprehend fully maybe... I hope I gave ya enough additional info to go on.

Oh, the Gov will throw everything they got at 'em.

Data drops and distance. Think rapidly propogating loosely affiliated cellular terrorist network. Some high level some low level players. Tell me how you see it working...

I'm up to my butt in alligators at the moment.

Give me until next week early to get to it. I'll peruse the more avant garde stuff and see if I can cook up something.

How bad a hassle do you want? You want your publication to be without pain, phone calls from irritated people, MIB visit, or "so, this is Turkey"?

Gators huh? Shoulda' drained the swamp earlier...

It's called "digital convergence" google it boogie... codename for "make it easier for THEM"... They got tricks WE haven't even invented yet. As Rod Serling would say "Consider this..." Mr. Gates (and Mr. Mac) has an unholy alliance with THEM as a "deal" to keep THEM off of his monopolistic back... That's why there is a hidden activity log in the background of your PC you can never* see, delete, or format... How it can be remotley accessed? I dunno... google skipjack and powerline communications for a likely scenario... no phone line or wi-fi needed... Talk about mil-ind complex in action! Now figure out how they circumvent key-escrow laws... Oh that's right itd called Patriot...

*Never is relative

Boogie you got the right guy with Erewhon however the w/o pain part may be a tad bit underestimated. You probably need to invest into some anti-electronica yourself. Also be careful which publisher you deal with too. Build some auto-blowback into alot of your private manuscript submissions that can only be tracked back to that particular compartmentalized pub agent. Therefore when you get that inevitable MIB blowback you know whence it came. (Old blowback junk mail trick... return address put Apartment # P-1 or some other type of indicator to figure out who sold your name to telemarketers and junk mailers...)

The only "relatively" safe mode IMO is 1-timers (i.e. pads) with 5-grouping and 1-way number stations. That's very old school stuff but evidently still worx I think... Also a very old technology from ancient Greece is still a real head scratcher for most cryptmasters... Try it sometime with a cylinder (TP roll?) and a narrow strip of paper. Geordi LaForge perfected the technique once in a ST-TNG ep when transmitting in the 24th century clear but not in a conventional way... Cardassians were clueless... or was it Romulans? Also remember how to beat the Borg one must be psuedo-random...

"Turkey?" Don't they have enuf' black-eyes from THEM and the other THEM?

VOIP is cool but all THEY need is a cooperative TPC (or VOIP vendor) employee to feed them line monitor feed off of the VOIP server. PC employees have no such laws or constraints on customer monitoring as it is THEIR equipment. They can do line maint. on a whim with no paperworx... Also please don't be deluded into thinking iDen is safe (Nextel w/t's?). That crap ain't even tampax* safe... Try NEXTELing (idle mode too) next to an audio amplifier, TV, radio, etc. Hear those little data bursts? Yup... that can be intercepted even w/o a cooperative telco employee... Ever hear funny noises over a C-SPAN mic when a Congressman's cellphone is too close to it... Think about it...

*Tampax delib misspelling...

Oh and "chips"??? Waaaay overhyped... That's NOT how they are going to do it. Its going to be something real easy and very old school. RFID is way too short range to be a eff. snoopy tool. You have to be up close and personal as it doesn't have its own power. It uses a parasitic power source. IOW the interogating unit supplys the juice. You'd be lucky to get the thing to propagate 1-meter away. So NO tin-foilers no geosync bird is that good... Think of the data storm, overlap, and data collisions.

If you want a free RFID chip just go to Wal-Mart and dig one out of a PURCHASED product soon. Also the ultimate RFID has been used a Exxon/Mobil for years and you didn't even know it huh? Its called SpeedPass... Mastercharge and McDonalds (Chicago area) are using them now. Ever see the MC commerical with the jogger yet... RFID is HERE baby!

The BRAIN chip is another kettle of fish... Its supposed to be a remote diagnostic tool for epiletics or some such rot... but it can be used to stimulate controlled endorfin release*. That coupled with chemicals (rusty rye?) and PH suggestion... well YKW is possible. You just have to loose your morality (read: humanity) so you can sleep nights. Have you been watching the news lately? Its starting again... Lets watch and see how their past mil & medical records will be lost or otherwise blocked by a sympathic governor. IMHO of course...

*I think comedian Woody Allen called it the "orgasmatron"?

Oh a neat resistance GIG gadget is the one I've been going on about invented by my opposite number Martin Earwicker... the REAL Q. Its that droprock PDA gadget. Uses store & forward technology. Better than an old fashioned deaddrop... But unfortunately Martin used it on the KGB/FSB which was really a very bad mistake* since they are probably a tad more experienced at espionage them most westerners (they've been doing it a lot longer). Google the story or look for my comments about it. Supposedly WE are using the same tech in YKW. I recommend to not try and fix it in the field as that's what gave it away in Moscow. Looks like a damn rock! But here are fake tree stumps, whole trees, and other sundry ground debris... Back during VNW does anybody remember SIDRs or CIDR? Looked like an animal turd but was actually a bunch of dropped siesmic sensors which transmitted code via VHF everytime it detected a tank, vehicle, or even footfall.

*Martin is now working at the musuem...

The chip is not for constant locator, I expected it to be nondetectable out of short range otherwise that would cause problems for the scenario. The chip is basic ID, payment method, house key, business card, PDA memory, etc. It can be effectively blocked by the user/wearer/implantee shielding the hand/card/tag with metallic wrap such as copper mesh or tin foil or something.

Futher thoughts on that?

Basic problem I see with scenario: chip users shake hands and chips exchange data. Is this nonsense? Or could chips have small onboard reserve power? Perhaps there is some nanotech power supply solution developed in the next 20 years? I think that might be acceptable analysis of the prospective sit in 2028.

I have simu-sex parlors set up in 2028 New Orleans where electrodes are attached in strategic places and VR headsets are provided for a rockin' good safe-sex time... vid and 'trodes are synced... They line 'em up on Bourbon street for that sheeeeyot. In my scenario, especially popular with bachelorette parties.

I would really like to further develop a scene where the martyr character gets a new msg and goes to a local newspaper to determine the decrypt key... any practical method for agreeing on how an encrypt/decrypt key would be determined by newpaper text? Some calculation using date, day of week, month, year, page number, line number, lettter number... Or something else entirely? What is the specific calcualtion I might have go through my character's head as she goes through a manual calcualtion on paper to determine decrypt key?

Current scene sketch:

Linda Nkosi looks out over the greenery of Jackson Square toward the glowing stone and the three sharp pinnacles of the Saint Louis Cathedral illuminated by the morning sun. She wishes she could take more drops to hide her irises, but the drops are starting to lose their effectiveness. She can’t afford for the drops not to work when she needs them to. Besides, her vision becomes severely affected by them and she needs to stay sharp. She knows that her survival now depends on an acute situational awareness.

Linda slips an encryption card into her handscreen and connects it to an anonymizing server in the European Union. From there, she connects to yet another anonymizing server in Australia. Linda looks up from the handscreen and checks the park once again. Everything seems fine. She draws a deep breath and connects to the Resistance network. She scans quickly and finds what she is looking for. In her scratch pad, she writes “IQNBQ CIYGT” and exits the Resistance system. She opens the Times-Picayune news site, performs a quick content search, does some figuring in her head, and writes down two series of numbers four lines of the page below the letters:

5 25 25 12 2 18 12 24 24 26

After she puts away her hand screen, she writes another number sequence underneath the letters but above the first series of numbers:

9 17 14 2 17 3 9 25 7 20

She begins doing some calculations on the paper. After she is finished, she has written a new line of numbers nearly at the bottom of the page:

4 18 15 16 15 11 23 1 9 20

Below those numbers she writes:

DROPO KWAIT

Drop OK. Wait. The package was received. She needs to pass the time until she gets further instructions. Linda releases the anxiety that had suppressed her appetite for too long. She immediately notices the scent of beignet wafting from Café Du Monde. She decides that a pair of fried cakes and a coffee might be worth the risk of detection. She sets fire to the piece of paper containing the encoded cyphertext, the keystream, and the decoded cleartext message. She watches them burn completely before she scatters the ashes with her shoe. She likes the thought of having both hardware encryption and message encryption that uses an unbreakable one-time key. She chuckles to herself as she thinks about the guys at the Data Dungeon going nuts over the messages they will find on the glorious day they announce they have broken the hardware encryption. She imagines the System melting down while trying in vain to break the codes with brute force. It is a good feeling.

Yes, I realize that any key derived from some sort of algorhythm rather than absolute randomness technically is not "unbreakable" and that shall play a role in teh plot of another book in the series...

Perhaps there are several different algorhythms, and one is discovered but owthers remain viable...

Does anybody SERIOUSLY think that by my writing all this stuff in a fictional novel I might see some REAL WORLD clowns in action or never see anybody or forever be indebted to you? All Them F____kers? What about admiring public?

Haloween is coming up... I wanna know what I should dress up as.

Wow, if the above didn't draw fire, I dunno what would... Big Grin

Don't worry this place (mil.com) is lousy with "real worlds"... Some like to send PM's chock full of vieled warnings and stuff. You probably won't get any flames as your stuff is pretty good and I would imagine that the admiring furbies are itching to send you some pointers gratis... They just need to figure out how without exposing themselves to YKW... You do know what a furby is don't you?

Here's an old school tip... ditch the newspaper... too hard to predict... go with Gideon Bible at cheap motel room... Use page number and paragraph/word counter or chapter and verse... whatever floats your boat. Also she could have a small cheapy sw rcvr from R/S that tunes some intl numbers stations. I heard of this one technique that uses a simple VHF cheapy police scanner that is simply elegant. Its so KISS that its really quite stupid... There are other tricks that I heard of that I will not discuss openly as it will cause those doors to shut tight...

Never use a anonymizer server for anything sensitive like what your martyr (protaganist) is doing... A guy with the fed's IT dept. shot his mouth off at a Cambridge Symposium on Inet security... Well suffice it to say there's nothing really anonymous about them. Esp. EU servers. Your best bet is to go to hacker and spammer school and learn about "other" undocumented methods to hide yer' @$$.

Also check out some really cool stuff from MIT Media Labs. They got stuff that's out of this world. I really dig the PGP modem secure telephone. Now that's thinking outside the box. But unfortunatley RSA was invented by YKW so...

Check out Edgar Allen Poe's "Purloined Letter" for a really KISS hiding method that still worx - sorta'.

How do I hook up witha hacker/spammer school?

I like the Bible thing, it actually goes with the Christian right vs. Christian left subplot...

From context of posts I have ready, I'm thinking "furby" are secretive natsec types. Please gimme double-ought good meaning if there is a more specific one.

Thanks for the help.

Well since I am "the enemy" in their eyes I don't know what to tell ya'. You can start by checking out everything Kevin "Capt Chrunch" Mitnick ever touched or check out this interesting web site 2600.com, but there are many.

They hang out at malls nationwide in the food courts once a month (sometimes Internet cafes, or Starbucks). Its like an unofficial monthly convention. But if your not pimply faced underachiever with low self esteem issues you will be made as a "narc" and you'll get a cold shoulder quick. You'd better come quick with the Unix code, nerd-ess, or geek-bonics, or at least know that a Trojan Horse is not just a Greek myth. All newbies get scanned... These guys usually have hacked DMV, feds, or some other highly restricted database or telecom system so they are better than our YKW sometimes. Kevin is a narc now so... (made an offer he couldn't refuse - escaped a few times only to be brought back - grown man too!)...

Spammer school is much the same. Just surf the net for SPAM tools. Not hard to find. Respond to a spam and find out who they use for UBE. Contact them and see how you can help them join in on the fun. Tell 'em your writing a book... not a stretch right? Thier egos will allow them to be socially engineered. And I'm sure you can pull it off. Most of them seem to be in Florida for some strange reason...

College kids at ivy league schools taking IT courses can be mined for data too. Just cozy up to them at Internet coffee shops in town or have a buddy recommend you. Use the book gambit too. Just as long as your not trying to narc 'em they might share valuable tricks of the trade with you.

Then there are the "others" that just can't share as it is their bread & butter literally. That could mean spooks, spies, furbies, John Law U.C., merks, private security firms, and PIs. Look at what just happened at HP! Damn that was a charlie-foxtrot! Somebody wasn't wearing their @$$ protector... Eek

The Bible thing is very old-school... All motels seem to have a Gideon (popular bible salesman?) but NOBODY usually reads it or touches it... Therefore a highly predictable scenario. Phonebooks are your second best but tend to drastically change annually.

Oh so you wanna' know what a FURBY is? IMWTK huh. Well Click here.

-ÔÓQ-

PS - Oh and anybody from the Netherlands too - De weerstand is futiel!
Børg
