I know this sounds wierd, but I've been hearing a rumor that Colt isn't making the M16 anymore. It could be bull**** like most rumors I hear...does anybody know anything about this? I searched through google and haven't found anything.
I live near them. I heard they are making M4 rifle now. Its shorter & lighter than the M16.

Colt Defense L.L.C., Hartford, Conn., was awarded on July 19, 2007, a delivery order amount of $71,090,756 as part of a $478,787,807 firm-fixed-price contract for M4 Carbines. Work will be performed in Hartford, Conn., and is expected to be completed by Dec. 30, 2010. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This was a sole source contract initiated on July 11, 2007. The U.S. Army Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command, Rock Island, Ill., is the contracting activity (W52H09-07-D-0425).
Colt doesn't own the patent rights to the M16. Infact they now don't even own the rights to the term "AR15".
They lost the US military M16 contract to Fabrique Nationale (FN) back in the early 90's, but they're manufactured at a plant in the US. In case you weren't aware, the M240 and M249 are both FN designs and are also manufactured by them here in the States.
The only US military weapon Colt manufactures is the M4.
I wish nobody was making the ar-15 or the m-16. I hate them. They are a ***** to clean and keep clean. AND BESIDES, WHY WOULD YOU TAKE A BULLET TO COMBAT THAT YOU CAN'T TAKE HUNTING? The old saying that if U wound someone doesn't always apply. Especially when U are fighting someone on their own terf. Let's get back to the 308 or 7.62 (they are the same bullet). After Vietnam, Soldier of Fortune ran an article explaining why no self respecting Meck would use a 223 or a 5.56 (they are the same also). If some retired general hadn't had his finger in the pot we would not have gotten stuck with the 223 or the 9mm.

You usually have to go to somewhere like a Minneapolis airport men's room to find manly magazines like that. How about instead just relating your combat experience with these rounds?
BTW-.223 Winchester and 5.56 NATO are only similar, not the same and not interchangeable. Same with 7.62 NATO and .308 Winchester.
the iraqis it was written was going to switch to M-4's. I also heard that the Iraqis wanted no part of the M-4, M-16 series. Defensetech.org said the former, mil.com reorted the latter. I would rather have an M-14, the EBR version is Soldier "friendly"..light, tight, and good in a fight.
