My situation. Wife is applying to various Phd programs with a distinct possibility of getting selected to a program in Colorado. With the closest Coast Guard Unit being Topeka (which would work as far as my rate goes being I'm a YN)it is not realistic for me to make the 10 plus hour one way drive every month. So before even contacting the powers that be in Topeka, I ask the question to you all...
Is IDT/ADT all at once even a possibility? I am a school teacher so completing all service requirements for the year at once during the summer would be just fine. Obviously I have the option of simply not re-enlisting after my initial contract is up (which is coming up sooner rather than later) but would prefer to stay in the SELRES.
Yes, I know that contacting Topeka is the first step in gaining specific information. I simply want to know if this is EVER done in the coast guard. I don't want to push this up the chain if this is not even a possibility.
Yes you can do ADT then IDT or vice versa as long as the command approves it. We have had several reserves complete their ADT then do the monthly IDT right afterwards.
Yes, you can do your ADT & IDT all at once. It all depends on your command. I have done it before because of school commitments so as long as your command approves, it is fine.
I drilled in Maine with the ANT Team at South Portland and I combined ADT and IDT. I would do the 24 days of IDT which was almost 5 weeks, no weekends, then do the 2 weeks of ADT. Worked well for me, they bought the plane ticket starting with the first week of IDT and ending with the last day of ADT. During the IDT I paid for the hotel on the weekends, during ADT they paid. This was 5 years ago so it might have changed
If there is a need and you can fill that need chances are something can be worked out. It all has to do with the "needs of the service", not "what works for me". That being said, if you are a good worker, have a good record and can be a benefit, most commands will try to work with you. I went from a year on Title 10 to 2 years of EAD. There was a month in between that was filled with IDT and ADT so I was never out of work. Of course the medical coverage was different during that month.
