I am interested in the Direct Petty Officer Program and it states that between the ages of 21 and 35 with a civilan skill may qualify. I'm a college junior, EMT (5 years) and humane law enforcement investigator (new). Would this full under an applicable civilian skill for the coast guard? They don't list examples so I'm blind. Thanks.

Are you going to pull those pistols or whistle Dixie?

Go to gocoastguard.com and contact a recruiter.

They should be able to tell you whether or not your civilian skills qualify you for the program.

Good luck!

Is EMT the skill you are talking about? If so, the only job that would come close is Health Services Tech. And the EMT skills most likely wouldn't qualify. As Jerry posted, the best start is the local recruiter, they will know if there are any Reserve openings in your area. If there are not, then the Reserve wouldn't be an option. Sounds like you'd be a better candidate for the full 8 weeks of basic and sent to an A school. CPO Kalbach

Chief,

The EMT won't get anyone into HS without going to HS A school.

I figured as much, if I have an applicant in question, I try and shoot the Rating Force Master Chief a quick email to cover bases. I had an RN that didn't qualify for HS. CPO Kalbach

Chief,

Would it be appropriate to e-mail the Rating Force Master Chief with questions concerning my qualifications? The reason I ask is that I am currently in the process of obtaining my various waivers to enlist as a reserve PS.

Thanks in advance!

Rather then contact the Rating Force M.C. you should do as Chief Kalbach suggested and start by contacting a recruiter. They can get your questions answered. That's why they exist.

It would be appropriate for your recruiter to handle that kind of coorespondence. We are the liasions and it's our job to do that stuff. CPO Kalbach

Fully concur with Chief on this. Let the Recruiter speak with the RFMC.
