Talk to a recruiter. We had a NYPD officer that went through the REBI Program for the reserves, he had no prior service. He was going port security.

You wold probably get stationed in NY area depending on what was available. Depending on how long you have been a cop, you would probably be able to come in as a PS3 and go to REBI. Talk to a recruiter.
As for your department letting you do it, they can't say no. My buddy is a NYPD officer and currently mobalized and he says they have been very supportive.
Good luck.

Drop me an email. I am a reservist, a former cop, a current lawyer, and know a little about USERRA as I represent a few Coasties with respect to their jobs (read, the City of New York) giving them issues re: Drills both IDT and ADT.

quote: as a police officer in the NYPD, how does it work if I wanted to join the US Coast Guard Reserves?
would I definately get stationed in the NYC area?
I know I would have to go through 8 weeks of boot camp... what is the process for police officers joining the reserves and would the department even let me do it? im a little unclear on how it would work for me so anyone with info is greatly appreciated ... thanks!
If you are a current NYPD with enough experience you may only have to attend the 2 week training course. You will need to talk to your local recruiter to see what PS billets are available in your area. As far as your department letting you, you'll have to ask them how supportive they are of your decision. Sounds like Mr. Bing has a handle on USERRA. CPO Kalbach
