Hey, I'm currently getting DEPd into coast guard RK program. I was also thinking about getting a tattoo on my upper back, it would just be a word phrase not a picture and it wouldnt show through my PT clothing and wouldnt be that big. Could they still deny me because of that or do you guys think its not that big of a deal?

if you can't see it over a t-shirt it should be just fine, as long as it is in good taste.

Be careful with that. If the tattoo isn't fully healed by your ship date, MEPS is within their rights to send you home and you would have to get a new date. Your best bet would be to wait until after you've completed basic training.

I agree. Wait until you are through boot camp. It could cause you a lifetime of embarassment to get one prior to boot and for some reason end up out of the CG.

There is a revised tattoo policy out now. for visibilty sake nothing above the collar of the dress blue shirt and nothing below the wrist line except for one ring on each hand. it goes further into detail on what tattoo's you can and can't have........yours should be okay.

Here it is:

New Tattoo Policy

I agree that the tattoo in question seems to be within the regs, however, MEPS will still send you home if it's not healed up properly. They will ask you specifically if there have been any changes in your medical history since your last physical, and they will also do an inspect physical where they will surely see the new tattoo. For your own best interest, wait until you complete recruit training.

I would defiently not get a USCG tattoo beofre finishing boot. At best the CC's are going to give you crap about it. I had a female in my sister company that had "USCG" on her leg. She ended up dropping out of boot. I bet she feels silly now.

You definitely do not want to get it after your physical, especially since you have a year to go until boot camp.

Too many things can happen in that year and there is no point in putting a CG tattoo on and then getting in a car wreck, changing your mind, or whatever and never actually serving.

The first part of your statement (yea i think im going to wait until after boot camp) is the right decision.

Please please please research and find out the history behind any "CG" insipred tattoo you might get. If you've been underway for a week - the best thing to do would NOT get sparrows tattooed.

Applause Great Idea! Nothing wrong with a CG tattoo, but you should wait until you've been there and done that.
