I've been lurking the last few days, taking a look at some of the posts, and decided to sign on.

I am giving serious thought to talking to a recruiter again for USCGR. I had initially sat down with them about 5 years ago prior to high school graduation. At the time, I don't think I was ready to make such a commitment. I find myself drawn to it again as I work to finish off my Bachelors degree in the next year or two.

Basic info:
24/male; Eagle Scout; high school graduate; I think I have 80-90 college credits at the moment; CPR/AED, first aid and lifeguard certifications and I am currently employed as a life guard and swim instructor.

What things do I need to consider as I continue looking into this? What are the things I need to ask of a recruiter?

I'll keep searching the forums here for some answers and will plan on making an appointment with the recruiter in the next few months.

Andrew

Are you going to pull those pistols or whistle Dixie?

What is your Major?

You've got a couple different choices: try to get a CGR job related to your Major, or try to get one completely different, but one that may interest you.

If you don't know what you want to do, try coming in as a non-rate and see all of the different CGR jobs (called "enlisted ratings") that are out there. I don't know if you would qualify for the Direct Petty Officer Program, as they don't have Reserve Aviation folks, and you seem to have similar skill sets as an Aviation Survival Technician (an Active Duty-only rating).

Your Bachelor's Degree may allow you to attend the Reserve Officer's Basic Indoctrination (ROCI) Course. A lot depends on the "needs of the service" at the time.

You're Eagle Scout status is worth a couple of enlisted stripes. Talk to a recruiter at 1-800-GET-USCG or gocoastguard.com.

Good luck!

Thanks. History is my college degree, so probably no luck there. I probably have the most interest in the BM rating.

I started looking at the ROCI-but I really don't want to push paper. My apologies if that is an incorrect assumption. When I work, I like to work. When we go to our winter schedule, we have 2 guards and do half hour on, half hour off. It kills me to just sit there, so I am constantly finding things to do. Probably the reason I am mostly teaching lessons.

I do recall from the first time I saw a recruiter the deal with Eagle Scout. I think it was starting as an E-3 after boot camp. I also scored high on the ASVAB they had us take in High School. I assume I may have to retake as it's been 5-6 years. I just remember the recruiter doing a double take when he pulled the file. I think I qualified for every enlisted rating but one or two of the science heavy ones.

Of course I know the easy answer is to just see the recruiter.

I don't comment on here very often but since I remember this happening I thought I would,as of last year or two years ago, I'm at home and don't have access to messages, the Coast Guard eliminated reserve non rates. An A school must be chosen upon enlistment now. Unless of course HQ changed direction again. Cool

Do they still offer split training option, then?

There are still Reserve Non-rates, just not Reserve Strikers.
