Basic Training

Just one more question on something im confused about. Someone told me in another post that PSUs are manned by several different rates. So lets say you went through GM A school and going to be stationed at a certain PSU, would you also go to PS A school? Or once you get one A school, thats the last one your going to? Unless maybe you request it? I dunno im confused. Never been in service, don't know how it works. In Civilian LE, you normally have to "put in" for any training. Thank you in advance, im just curious.

No. If you are stationed at a PSU as a GM you would not go through PS A school. PS is its own rating just like GM.

Ideally you only go to A school once. It is possible to change ratings and lateral to a different one per approval. In that case you would go to your new rating's A school and more than likely be reduced in rate back to E-4 if you're an E-5 or above.

I hope this isn't too confusing.

OK...

RATING is your enlisted "job" in the CG. The Army calls them Military Occupational Specialities. GM, PS, YN, and SK are examples of ratings.

RATE is your enlisted "rank" in the CG. Examples are PO3, PO1, CPO, MCPO.

Enlisted personnel have rates and ratings, and are advanced; officers have ranks and specialties and are promoted; and everybody has a paygrade - but there is no E-10, only an E-9 with special pay. Wink

Pete - pretty good post, especially for a SN! One minor detail - there is no 'more than likely' about it. If you go to an A-School, you WILL graduate no hiogher than E-4 in your new rating.

lawman, what do you want to do in the Coast Guard Reserve? If you have prior LEO training you could possibly be a PS without having to go to A school. If you want different training/job then you'll get sent to an A school, whatever A school you go to that is the job you will do at your unit.

I'm glad you are getting additional info here, but your "local recruiter" knows what is available in your area(unit/jobs) they are going to be able to advise you the best. If you have the units close by, you "should" go and take a tour and actually talk "face to face" with your possible new work mates so you can get a first hand look at what you could be doing. I posted this in another thread of yours. CPO Kalbach
