I have been instructed that the only way to join the reserves from Active Duty as an OS2 is to change rate due to a lack of OS billets in Texas, where I will be residing. Is this a load of crap or is it true? If it is true what are the chances that I will have to drop to SN or PO3 when I do change rates? If I change rate to IS2 will I lose my rank since OS's had the availablity to change to IS's? Can anyone provide me with some options or clarity on this issue?

Where did you get that info from? Did you speak with your Reserve AO? Depending on the unit sometimes they could just put you in an unbudgeted position or double billet.

I talked to my Yeoman who then sent me to a person at our local ISC. Then I was forwarded to someone at ISTT in order to switch rates I apparently have to route something through my command to change rates. Apparently there are no OS billets in the state of Texas so the rate change is my only available option as far as transition into the reserves goes. My question is "are there any people who know these things for sure who can provide me solid information?" Or do I just continually talk to someone who a person refers me to in a chain of he said she said? I guess since I have been in so long I would like to find the book so I can see whats what... Anyone have any ideas?

You need to find the Reserve Policy Manual (RPM) - I know it's on the directives site.

Look up the process for changes in rating - it's a little bit different than the AD process in the PERSMAN. Remember, you're following the reserve process not the AD process - you may have to emphasize that point to somebody along the way. Wink

Your ISC should be able to tell you what ratings are needed in its AOR, and where the billets might be.

What's ISTT?

ISTT is the Interservice Transfer Team. I have discussed it with one person from this division. I will be transferring from Active Duty to Reserve so will it still be in the RPM? I honestly do not want to change rates if at all possible. My question is: Do I need to talk to my rating force manager or something like that to see if maybe they have some inside information? The person I was referred to at ISC basically said it was not possible for me to stay an OS2, so I'm wondering if they will let me rotate to IS2 and keep rank. Probably not going to happen but I'm a competent person and I'm sure I could do an IS2's job with training. Anyways I will look into the RPM and see what I can find. I'll see how many updated editions there are and find out which one is up to date. Thanks for the help so far guys.

txglen, the ISTT at Recruiting Command is your direct liasion with EPM and the ISC that is responsible for billets in the state of Texas. So they are in the know on what is and what is not available.

Did the ISTT member tell you there were IS2 billets? If there are not you won't be considered for that either.

Your active duty command isn't in the know when it comes to an AD person going into the SELRES, that is why there are people in the ISTT doing that job.

You need to reconnect with the ISTT and get this hammered out. CPO Kalbach
