Hey Im 22 looking to possibly join USCG Reserve in the fall. I wanted to know a few things..
-Is there Fire/Rescue Opportunities for CG Reserve? -what will my Associates degree get me? would u recommend any particular program for 2 year degree? -Are reservists Armed when on duty? -Is port security a good gig, and are they armed? -As a reservist can you be deployed more than just 1 weekend a month 2 weeks out of the year and what are those chances? - is this more than just a part time job and is it awesome? |

Have you talked with a USCG recruiter? If not then the first thing you need to do is contact a recruiter. He/she will answer your questions. Search the USCG websites to locate a recruiter in your area.

-Is there Fire/Rescue Opportunities for CG Reserve?
We don't do much firefighting anymore but you will get some shipboard firefighting training in bootcamp. If you are assigned to a small boat station then Search and Rescue will be your bread and butter. -what will my Associates degree get me? would u recommend any particular program for 2 year degree? It might get you E-3 right off the bat but I'm not positive about that. Ask a recruiter. -Are reservists Armed when on duty? If their job requires it and they are qualified, Yes. -Is port security a good gig, and are they armed? If you mean a Port Security Unit, then it can be a good job. I was in one for 4 years and enjoyed it. Yes, we were armed. -As a reservist can you be deployed more than just 1 weekend a month 2 weeks out of the year and what are those chances? Yes. The chances depend on your unit and job. My advice is to count on it happening. I heard one senior officer say that average reservist is called up about once every five years. Some more, some less. - is this more than just a part time job and is it awesome? I have been in the reserves for over 16 years and it is more than a part-time job. My reserve experience got me my current civilian job. I'm too old to really use the word "awesome" but I will say that joining was one of the best decisions of my life. Good luck. |

Damn right its awesome. The USCGR is NOT for everyone, but if you do your time, study hard, show up and WORK, it'll pay off. I've been in six years as a reservist and plan on doing at least twenty years. I freaking love the USCGR. The benefits far outweigh any negatives. The $4500 a year for tuition assistance is a BIG help for students. I plan on doing my masters and possibly PhD. and having the USCG pay for it. |

The first thing you need to do, is contact your local recruiter to see if there is any Reserve availability in your area first, if there is not, then the point is moot.
