I'm not sure if this is the correct thread for this question, but, I wanted to inquire about what the criteria were for accelerated petty officer reserve enlistment as a Port Security Specialist?
From what I've read it is open only to persons with parallel civillian experience - is that correct? I'm 30 y/o, (recently) a reserve police officer (which is 220 hours as opposed to 720) and a NREMT certified EMT. I left college about 2 quarters short of my degree and work in corporate communications for a liqour company (which I doubt is very applicable!). Do you think I could go into the accelerated petty officer program as port security or should I look at a different rating?

With your college and age you could attend REBI and then go to PS A school, if there are Port Security billets in your area.
Typically you need Armed experience, that's why alot of PS's are LEO's, prior Marines, 11B Infantry. What you've described is pretty thin for the accelerated program. CPO Kalbach
Thanks to everyone for sharing the information you have. It helps guys like myself make an informed decision. Now for my question.
I am trying to determine if the CG port securty specialist is right for me. My recruiter thinks so (smile), and it does seem to be what I am looking for. I am 30 years old with Prior L.E experience. I got out of L.E about 9 months ago (I was a Deputy Sheriff) and now I am bored out of my mind behind a desk in county government. I think this rate would be great for me until I fulfil the promise I made to my current boss (I promised her I would wait two years before I went back into L.E..which I am..I should have never left..but oh well..).
That being said, what should I prepare for at REBI mentally? To date, the police academy was the hardest thing I have ever done, it was 10 weeks of hell. Period. It has also been the most rewarding. 2 weeks just doesn't seem like a very long time to indoctrine myself to anything. I am more than willing to put in the long hours, hard PT, and the screaming and yelling (all part of the game my friends)...but how much of that is in REBI? LOL. My recruiter said it was "a relaxed atmosphere" which is fine either way. Just wanted to have the mind set before hand. To anyone who is going, it looks like a great opportunity. I look forward to the possibility of serving with you.
REBI is nothing like boot camp. You march to and from chow and certain courses, and that's about all the boot camp like experience you will have. That's not to say that it isn't challenging; just not tough in the company commander in your face kind of way. There's a lot of information to absorb in a very short period of time, and there is a lot of work. Overall it's a very rewarding experience. As far as the yelling and screaming, you won't get any of that from your actual company commanders, but every once in a while another company commander might light into you if they don't know you're in REBI.
Best advice I can give is go into it ready to work hard and do whatever they tell you to do. It sounds like you have a good attitude and will have a good time.
But, went through it. It roughly 90% classroom, and 5% PT, and 5% damage control lab, gun range, line-handling lab, etc.
We even got a tour of the station there. My CC tried to get us a tour on one of the cutters, but couldn't fit it into the schedule. We were also allowed to "view" the buses coming in on the 2nd Tuesday we were there. THAT WAS FUN! Especially for me, being prior Navy. Most of my class was made up of PS' who had zero military experience and they were mostly civilian LE (sherriff, PD's, etc). We had 2 PO1's, YN1 and GM1. Pretty much everyone else was PS3 or PS2, except for me, the lonely YN3.
Well, Just got back from the REBI course..grad the 22nd. It wasnt that bad. They treated like adults vs recruits. We had 11 of us but 2 failed the swim test and did not graduate. But other than that it wasnt that bad.

Yes I was prior service AD CG from 96-01. Served on the Cutter Spar, Sta Boothbay Hbr, SK A School and then Group Southwest Hbr...all in Maine. Drilling at SFO Southwest Hbr.
Yes they do you let you shoot the new sig. Not a big fan of that gun...I like glock better..but thats me. We had some guys qualify on it. They are trying to include the rifle, etc for future rebi's...still in the works.
