Basic Training |
I'm entering my senior year in high school and I’m exploring different career opportunities. I'm fairly confident I do not want to go active duty, but I don't know much about the reserve. If I join, I know I want to be a BM and would not want to be an officer.
Can someone provide me with a brief synopsis of what Reserve service entails (pay, required service, assignment, training, etc.)? From a Reserve perspective, is it more difficult to get your quals? In the BM rating and on the Reserve side, is it common to qualify past Coxswain (Heavy WX Coxswain/ Surfman- of course dependant on where you are stationed), or is that realistically where it stops? Currently, I'm taking all my classes at the local community college, so I will graduate high school with my Associates Degree. On top of that, I'm a member of the CG Auxiliary and have my Auxiliary Boat Crew qual. I know on the active duty side, there are enlistment "bonuses" for having college credits and for being in the Auxiliary- does this apply to the reserve? I know some of theses questions would be more appropriate for the "Recruiter's" forum, but I was hoping for insight from both sides. |

What "both sides" are you looking for?
You need to know that CG recruiters are much different than DoD recruiters, in that they usually have WAY more applicants than billets to fill. A CG recruiter will be able to answer all of you questions without one of us having to research all of your questions to answer them here. The recruiter will already have the answers. Good luck! |
