Once you've been assigned to a unit, what happens if you move, say, across the country? And what if there aren't any billets available in the area where you relocate to?

If the last sentence was true, IRR of Travelocity.com are your best choices. With the possible exception of PSUs, we try to be flexible as we can with drilling locations.

You request transfers through your chain of command - see the Reserve Policy Manual.

If there's no paid billet available at your new location, you may have to drill for points only until a paid billet opens up, or you travel (on your dime) to a location where there is a paid billet.

From personal experience.....
I did a reserve PCS from East to West coast at the beginning of 2006. Started the process in October of 2005 by notifying my servicing FOT at Portsmouth. They had me contact Alameda and check for available billets. I was offered billets in Alameda only. Problem was that it was 400 miles from my new home in Southern California.
My advice is to check it out as early as possible. You may be able to get an UNBUDGETED billet closer to home but the FOT has the final say.

My little crystal ball tells me that the unbudgeted positions will be getting harder to find.

Like my recruiter told me, a lot of the billets in my area are filled, so we are hunting and pecking for something. Good luck.

I was told the following by recruiters:

1) If I were to move to an area that did not have a coast guard base within 100 miles, I would have the choice of either putting in the extra mileage or going IRR.

2) If the area did have a base, but did not have a unit/rating that matched the one I left, I would have the choice of waiting (again, by going IRR) until it became available.

In your experience, is this correct?

if one enters the IRR awaiting the opening of a certain billet, for say 6 months, does that time go on at the end of your MSO when you re enter selres?

just curious...

You were told correctly, you won't be discharged just because there is no opening, you can re-enter the SELRES from IRR once a billet opens up. Always be proactive and do your research so you know what is available. CPO Kalbach

Every non-prior service person has an 8 year military service obligation. If you have to go IRR because there is no billet, then however long you are in IRR takes off that 8 years. CPO Kalbach
