The selection board announcement is a week late all ready and that means it should be out any day now. Look for an ALCGPERSOM message soon! Good luck to all that applied.
Here is something else for those selected to chew on...The CWO Board announcement stated, "APPLICANTS MUST AGREE TO TRANSFER TO A VACANT, OR PROJECTED VACANT RC CWO POSITION FOR A MINUMUM OF TWO YEARS FROM THE APPOINTMENT EFFECTIVE DATE." This was also the case when I was selected in 2006. I just rec'd an e-mail from RPM letting me know that my assignment has been extended to five (5) years IAW the following: "NORMAL TOUR LENGTH FOR A RESERVE CWO IS 5 YEARS AS ANNOUNCED IN REF A (COMCOGARD PERSCOM ARLINGTON VA 191343Z JUN 07/ALCGPERSCOM 029/07). THE MAJORITY OF RESERVE CWOS CURRENTLY HOLD TOUR ROTATION DATES OF 30 JUN 09 FROM THE CENTRALIZED RESERVE CWO ASSIGNMENT PANEL IN 2005 ANNOUNCED IN REF D. IDEALLY CWOS WILL NOT MOVE PRIOR TO COMPLETION OF THEIR TOURS; EARLY ROTATIONS ARE CONSIDERED WHEN THE MEMBER HAS SERVED AT LEAST TWO YEARS OF THEIR CURRENT ASSIGNMENT AND THE NEW POSITION DESIRED IMPROVES THE REASONABLE COMMUTING DISTANCE FOR THE MEMBER." Vacant billets can be far apart and the onus is on you to arrange and pay for transportation to/from drills. Just something to keep in mind when the call from RPM comes offering you a commission as CWO2.
There's only three billets in my specialty. I hold one locally, there's one in Seattle that's held by a local guy, and there's one in Jacksonville that's held by a local guy.
That means I'll have to commute to Jacksonville or Seattle, and one or the other of them will have to commute to Chicago or the other open spot.
And also remember that just because you end up in your dream location, you only get that location for 5 years and will likely have to seek new opportunities elsewhere to be well-rounded. The stars don't want homesteading anymore. So travel will be in the future of almost all RC-CWOs, unless you live in an area that has many in your rate. It is the best way to go for responsibility vs assignment and measuring the pay, especially after 30 years of service retiring as a W-4. Well worth the effort to go from E-7 to W-2....
