I have applied for SRDC 02-08, but naturally, I'm preparing a Plan B.

In the event I am not selected, I am absolutely willing to return to the enlisted corps (I was 8 years prior active duty Air Force, 1N375D [Intelligence, Persian Farsi linguist - if you couldn't tell from my s/n Smile ].

However, I would love to experience a different career field than my regular day job - which is obviously still intel. not tha I'm opposed to intel, I just think life is too short to limit yourself to one career field.

I live in Tampa, so I'm not sure if Health Services is available (or ever becomes available) as a rate in this area or elsewhere in Florida. I'm also very interested in PS, since PSU 307 is right down the road in St. Pete.

Thoughts or feedback from personal experiences with related careers fields would be great. My recruiter is awesome, but I know that sometimes the best career breakdowns come from those that are actually gainfully employed in the job!

Many thanks in advance.

AFPerling,
I'm a little confused here. You've stated that you have applied for SRDC 02-08... Then a statement is made about health services and PS rates. I recommend you take a look in the ROCI forum.
To quote CeleretAudax on 11 FEB,
"The technical specialists are the enlisted rates E4 and higher, and that is why they attend A-School for their specialty. So if you are in a healthcare field and want to specialize in that in the CG, go in as an HS rate, not an officer. Reserve officers get to do some technical stuff (such as vessel boardings) but by in large our job is administrative and not nearly as much fun or exciting."

I just wanted to make sure you knew what you were getting into. Your post makes it sound like you're expecting to specialize through "A" School. This wouldn't be the case as a Reserve Officer. Smile

not sure where the confusion lies... i am inquiring for input on a couple different enlisted career fields IF i am not selected for SRDC 02-08.

i'm aware of the difference in career specialties between O and E. again, just prepping a Plan B. Smile

and trust me... what i do on a daily basis as an intel geek - while sometimes pretty darn cool - pales in comparison to a reserve officers opportunity in the coast guard. which is why i applied.

i'm hoping for the best outcome, but preparing for the worst scenario, if you know what i mean...

hope that clears my question up a bit! Smile

AFPerling,
I understand what you're asking now. Sorry about that. I asked similiar questions but in the context of being a reserve Officer. I wanted to know if they would try to place me in something related to my prior enlistment rate or try to keep me in my degree field. I was told that it was strictly up to the needs of the Coast Guard and then the officers provided me with examples of both scenarios. I would prefer to be involved with a PSU as well. Id be interested to see what the answer might be to your original question concerning enlistment rates.
Good Luck!

thats cool, no worries.

i'll just take it as it comes. the coast guard is something i want to do so i'm cool with being patient until something opens up.

or, i'll just take whatever is handed my way, salute smartly and drive on.

AF, if PSU 307 is just down the road, see if your recruiter can get you a tour of the unit. You also need to ask your recruiter if there are any HS billets open for them to recruit to. There has to be a need for any Reserve position for a recruiter to recruit to. Your local recruiter has a list of availabilities. CPO Kalbach
