I'm a college student looking to join the CGR to help me out with school and do something interesting. I've been looking at the ratings and am trying to decide which one I would like best. Is it possible, do any of you know through past experience or people you knew, to get multiple ratings - i.e. go through BM A school and then DC A school, for example. If it is possible, is it frowned upon in the reserves?

My problem is that I want to learn too much and do everything. haha. Also, my location (MI) doesn't seem to have many billets for reservists aside from BMs and MKs, which would be cool but i'd love to be a DC too.

You can only pick one rate so make it the one you would like to do best.

BM an MK are the way to go in the reserves, more advancement and job choices. DC's are a rate that are slow to promote and have limited units that have them.

There's no Guaranteed DC A schools at this time for Reserve, so that's out. You want DC, go MK. CPO Kalbach

You can always come in get 1 rating, then request a lateral change in rating to another. Subject to command approval, and the needs of the service.

tip - you make that sound too easy. It is not subject to Command approval, it is subj to Comdt approval, specifically the RFMC and CGPC-rpm. The needs of the service bar is a pretty high one in these cases and getting higher.

Hmmm...never said it was easy. Command includes all the way up to COMDT. Wink

Well, not quite PO3, but a PS1 we just hired was offered IV2. He took it.

A local detective in a rough & tumble suburb next to Chicago, he handles homicides regularly and violent crimes almost every weekend.

But he always wanted to get into CGIS, and he'd only been a PS1 since 1 Jan. He's excited and ready to go to work for us.

Jerry,

I was speaking from personal experience. I attempted to lateral and was told by the FMC that I would have to take PO3 after A school.

I would drop a stripe for IV though. Good on him for taking it.

You could keep your school going and then join as an officer. They have some programs for those in progress of getting a degree.
As an officer, you won't be tied to a specific specialty and will be expected to be able to do a lot of different things.
Not that you couldn't kick *** as a MK and then become an awesome officer later.
