I am thinking of joining the USCG Reserve. I am 21 years old and have 2 semesters left after this one until I graduate. I don't know if it matters but I am majoring in business.

How long is boot camp? Is it 2 weeks or 8?

Is it possible to be commissioned as an officer in the reserve with no prior service?

Thanks,

Henry

Boot Camp is 8 weeks for active duty and I believe it's the same for reserves. You should contact a recruiter to answer all your questions. Also there is a Reserve Direct Commission program but I believe you must have at least one year of military service to apply. Again, check with a recruiter for the latest information because details and requirements are always changing. To find a recruiter closet to you check out this website: www.gocoastguard.com.

Boot camp is 8 weeks long

Reserve Enlisted Basic Indoctrination is 2 weeks long: for people with prior service or civilian skills that transfer to a Coast Guard job, with your age you'd attend the 8 week version.

ANSWER: you could apply to the Select Reserve Direct Commission Program, the sometimes waive the 1 year of military service.
