First let me say Thank You! to all Military Personnel across the various branches of the service this Memorial Day weekend. You are appreciated!
I'm 35, with no prior enlistment of any branch of the service and want to join the USCGR. In high school(graduated in 1991) I took 2 years of JROTC and at the time, ASVAB scores were high enough to get a Coast Guard recruitment letter. Physical fitness is not an issue, was a Life Guard and Water Saftey instructor for years. 6'3 190lbs right now. Education wise, I'm working on my B.S. in Information Technology. I live in the Eight District, Nashville, TN to be exact. And I regret not joining and going Active Duty. Now at 35 I need a little more sense of purpose and excitment in my life. That being said, I have contacted a recruiter in my area last week but haven't heard anything as of yet, so I thought I would try my luck in this forum, for help with a few questions. Is my age the reason why the recruiter hasn't contacted me? USCG website says my age is cut off point, but do they ever realistically let 35 yr olds with "no prior" experience join? Would my former ASVAB or JROTC experience or current Computer experience help in consideration of my selection? Do they ever let 35yr old CG Reservist go Active Duty? Is there ever any need for CG Reservist in my area or would I have to move. Or am I wasting my time all together? Any information or feedback is appreciated. Thx USCGR wanna be |

There is a program called R.E.B.I. which stands for Reserve Enlisted Basic Indoctrination. It's a 12 day program at Cape May Training Center. I joined the USCGR through this program and I had no prior military experience. But I got in because I have a B.S. in Criminal Justice and I'm 30 years old. Ask your recruiter about this program. You may have to push your recruiter a little bit and keep calling. I had to do a lot of my own leg work and phone calls to my recruiter to get answers and don't hesitate to talk to someone else at the recruiting station. Good luck

You might need to just show up at your recruiter's office. CG recruiters are often not very responsive, but they'll have a hard time ignoring you when you're inside an office.
A recruiter will have info about what openings are available for your area and be able to tell you if they're in line with what you want. If you can finish up your B.S. by next year, it's not too late for you to apply to be an officer even with no prior experience. Good luck! |
