If it was issued by your unit to you, you are still responsible for it. Turn it back in, let them get it off your property record and let them dispose of it.

I've always cut them up the best I could to physically destroy them and then toss 'em in the dumpster! Just make sure that they are not salvagable.

We always gave them to the local coast guard armory. Not sure if they used them for range training or what but they were always more than appreciative.

If you're asking for the unit, a couple of suggestions:

Ask around and find out if any of the local smaller PDs don't issue body armor to their officers, and then make a donation. Used body armor is better than no body armor at all.

With the panels cleaned up and a new carrier, I'm sure it would be appreciated.

There are a number of factors that degrade body armor: sunlight, detergents, constant wear. But even degraded armor still stops rounds that it is rated for.

I've heard of used armor going overseas to officers without it in foreign countries, also.

Local PDs can also use it for target backings if they make their own reactive pistol targets instead of buying steel pepper poppers. With the old armor behind the target, it moves when shot at and hit. Pretty inexpensive to do. It's always interesting to shoot them up on the range to see the actual effects the rounds have on them (both what the vests are rated for, and what they are not rated for).

Just don't throw it out. Cut it up, make it unusable as was already suggested. I know of one incident in which body armor bought by the CG ended up being found where it absolutely shouldn't have been. Dispose of it properly!

Why not take it to Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office (DRMO)? They will make sure it is properly disposed of or if possible - reutilized. Whisper
