Hey, I'm considering/going to be joining the reserves while I'm in college, Is any one currently doing this? And what do you typcally do? I know it's always changing from LE to SAR etc... but in general what's it like? Thanks a bunch!
I joined the reserves in the last two years of college. Most of guys at my station were college students. I joined the CGR under the RK program. I went to boot camp during the summer then attended the fall and spring semesters. The following summer I attended "A" school. For drilling, it worked just like the commercial. We did one weekend a month and did our two weeks during the summer, but sometimes we went during the week for training. Remember that you could be activated at ANY time and you could be pulled out of school. The good thing is that by law the school can't force you start the semester from the beginning. Some universities are considered "military friendly" by DOD. I finished school in 2006 so things could be a bit different now. I have some guys at my station who are in college now whom I'm sure would be happy to give you some info. Just shoot me your info. Good luck.
Make sure to find out what your college or university's policies are on tuition or fee refunds if you have to leave school involuntarily for a mobilization.
I also spent the last 2 years of my undergrad in the reserves and came in under the RK program. I'll be starting my master's degree in the fall with four years of drilling to go in my contract. The RK program is really great for college students and I highly recommend it.
As for drilling, my command allows me to drill whenever as long as I give my supervisors a heads up as to when I am coming in and that I complete my annual obligation. Normally I drill with the active duty side during the week. I'm an MST and my days are typically spent doing facility inspections.
Hey, I'm a Sophomore in college and I've been thinking of joining the reserves as a Storekeeper. I only have a year and half left till I'll have my bachelors and was wondering if it was likely that someone with that rate would be called to active duty. I do want to go active at some point, especially when I graduate, I'm just concerned that if I did now that it could really impact my education since I'm a full-time student living away at school. I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with this or any advice on what would be the best thing for me to do now.
If you enlist in the reserve, do so with the expectation that you will be recalled to active duty no matter what rating you end up becoming.
If you put off enlisting now because you're worried about its impact on your studies, what's not to say you'd be worried about how enlisting interferes with the civilian job you get after college or your family if and when you decide to start one?
Believe me, college isn't going anywhere and given the current job market, delaying graduation because you were recalled isn't a bad thing. Just my 2 cents.

During OPN Desert Shield/Storm, we had a Seaman recalled and deployed who had been a Senior in college.
He said he had been happy to get the BIG room in the frat house, had just cleaned it up from the previous occupant and was ready to get on with being a BIG man on campus.
His mom called him and told him the CG called for him. Jeff thought it was about his Montgomery GI Bill for tuition.
Surprise...
He spent the majority of his Senior year in Saudi Arabia.
Snowboarder you have been asking questions about joining since back in Sept. of 07. You wanted to be a pilot, gunner join the USAF and what ever else you can come up with. By now you should be 18 years old. 5hit or get off the pot.
