Hello, I will be retiring within the year and I am starting to look at getting our final move arranged. My question is moving HHG and my family. My home of record is Hawaii. We want to move back to Florida, my last duty station. Since they would move us back to Hawaii, how would I go about just doing a DITY move. Getting paid upfront for the move and travel as if we were going to Hawaii, yet go to Florida. I am not trying to do anyting illegal, but obviously I am trying to use the system to my benifit. Thank you

Check with your shipboard PS or PSD. Unless the rules have changed since 1990, I believe you are authorized one final move and it does not have to be Home of Record.

I went to TAP within the last month and this is what they said.

If retiring they will move you anywhere in the United States.
If separating they will pay up to your home of record. Anything else you have to pay the difference.

If I read your question right you want to retire locally in Florida, but you want to be paid travel to Hawaii? What would you tell a subordinate shipmate that was planning the same scheme?

WS, it doesn't sound like he is in FL now, it sounds like his previous duty station was in FL.

Split, the foreign country advice is good info if he wants to move to Miami.

Anonymous Dude, you get paid travel to and can have HHG shipped to "home of selection" when you retire, which may or may not be home of record. So yes, when you complete the gazillion and a half reams of forms to retire several of them will ask you for your "home of selection".

Also, you can ask to be transferred to a duty station near where you plan to retire six months to a year before you retire. You can ask, but they don't have to say yes, and a lot depends on what you do and where you are and how long you have been there and where you want to go. Keep in mind that if you do this, you won't get to ship HHG when you retire so be very sure that is where you want to retire.

As you can see opinions are like a------s, there is some I believe are accurate and some not so much. Any good personnel office Yoeman will look up the current rules. Believe me anything you try to do will either be OKed or it will be denied. One thing about the military is they only go with black and white, most current edition.
