After seven mediocre years in the Navy (Just kidding - wouldn't trade my time in for anything), I've decided to move on. Unfortunately, no one in my command seems to know what happens when you rejoin the civilian life, and the ones that do are often wrong.
Maybe there's someone here who can give me answers and point me in the right direction. 1.) Unemployment - how many months does the Navy pay while I'm out "job hunting?" 2.) Medical coverage - how long does this last? 3.) Does the new GI Bill offer BAH for the state your are currently living in, or your home state of record? Any help would be appreciated. |

when i RETIREED af ter 20 years, tap was a big help. i skipped the classes where they had folks coming in to offer us jobs ( i had done alot of planning, etc and already had my own buisness, no bills, etc) as i really wasn't interested. for retirees, we able to go to different classes - one for folks who were retiring, and one for folks just getting out. and they were good. but go twice. i had questions 2 weeks after the class. |

I thought TAP was a requirement.
And you should definately go AT LEAST twice, a third time would be very helpful. TAP will answer all of the questions you have about transitioning. If it doesn't, you have the experts there to answer any questions remaining. |

None the Navy does not provide unemployment, the states do. Each state has their own requirements but normally if you separate voluntarily you are not eligible.
The day you are discharged is the end of medical coverage. You can elect to purchase supplemental insurance but it is very expensive and must be paid prior to discharge.
Check with the VA. Sounds like you have not been through TAPS/SEPs as these questions are answered in that course. It is required that you attend prior to discharge so get with your CCC about scheduling. |
