Hi Vung Chua Vets. I'm in the process of looking for anyone who was assigned to Long Lines North or 36duce, 518th or AFRTS on Vung Chua Mountain who can help me obtain information on the soldiers who were WIA and KIA on August 22, 1968.
I arrived in May of 1968 and left in May of 1969 and experienced the attack on our compound that started about 2AM, which immediately took the life of the front gate guard. Sorry I don't remember his name but I remember he was about to go home in a few days from being kIA. I've never experienced anything as bad as that night. Next morning I helped pick up the dead and the sight of the dead mutilated bodies was horrific.
A few of the Long Lines guys received purple hearts and a couple received bronze or silver stars for their active part in defending the upper barracks where a few of our guys were mortaly wounded by a VC grenade and were medivaced out.
Some of the people I remember are: Percy Pike our company commander 1st Lt, SP5 David King, SP4 Andy Anderson, and a cool guy from California named Murphy or Murph. PFC Patchin, a guy named Ross who passed out from drinking almost a full bottle of vodka. So many others that I can't remember their names but I can see their faces.
I am Jerry Ault, was a SP5 and worked in the EE building when I wasn't on guard duty or paremeter duty with the rest of the guys on the hill. It was hard duty 12 hour 7 day work week, guard detail abut 3 or 4 times a week, chow was horrible until they built a new chow hall and got us a real cook. I ate a ton of K rations :>( and drank a river of sodas.
If you belong to this site and you are out there let me know. I'd love to hear from you.
SP5 Jerry Ault

I sure remember your name but cant put a face to it. Thanks for the posting. I couldnt remember Lt Pike's name. I have tried for years to locate him. The attach was actually August 12, at midnight. Henry Lee Bradshaw was the MP killed at the guard station. I didnt know his name till I found it thru deaths in NM on August 12th. I do remember Anderson, Patchin, Murphy and Ross but didnt have a lot of contact with them. I pretty much worked 12/7 as a tech controller in EE. I'm not really sure what they did on VC. If you have any info on Lt Pike I sure what like to know. Larry Halsey in Ore was the only person I kept any contact. Jul68-Jul69
Hi, Sorry I don't think you gave me your name. Thanks for the Gate Guard's name. I really couldn't remeber the attack date. I thought it was August 3rd, then I saw another posting where somone said it was August 22nd. I'll take your word that it was the 12th.
That night we had to clean the barracks because of a special VIP visit the next morning. A few of the guys in the first barracks thought it would be fun to pour beer all over me because I din't drink. However, after the attack all of them came to me and appologised for doing that. People do strange things in times like that.
I had been in contact with Andy Anderson a couple of times. I haven't heard from anyone else from Vung Chua all of these years. I don't know where Pike is, I do remember he was a math major in college, but don't recall which college he attended. Patchin was in Tech Control and I worked in the Radio Room. Do you remember the Chicken Man? Crazy skinney guy. I think I still have a photo of him and a few others working in the EE. If you are interested my email address is email@example.com. Get in touch and I'll share info and photos with you.
Thanks for the info. Yes, I remember the guy referred to as chicken man. I was the ncoic in EE tech control from about dec 68 to jun 69 then turned it over to the new guys. Larry Halsey and I laid back and pulled guard duty the last month. Patchin worked there on occasion
Lt Pike was my mentor and will always appreciate his trust in my abilities. Got a new Lt in apr 69 and we never did click.

My name is Ted Schurter and I live near Trenton, NJ. I think we have been in contact before, but it was a long time ago. I was assigned to Long Lines North and was on VCM from August of 1967 to July of 1968. I was one of the original crew to be assigned to Long Lines, at first we lived in tents. I am under time pressure today, but later will add a list of names that I remember. Has anyone gone to Google Earth and looked at the old site? It appears to be deserted except for a large tower. The bill board antennas are gone, but one can clearly see the concrete foundations which remain.
Hey Billie and Ted. I believe we have had short conversations several years ago.
That was a crazy night and the next few days were even crazier. Most of us didn't get any sleep for over 48 to 50 hours, then when we did it was for a short period. I got to catch 40 winks on the cold hard floor in the EE. That went on for 3 days and nights. Finally the construction crews fixed out barracks and we could go back in them for some sleep followed by more guard duty.
I spent more than 2 days in a make shift sandbag bunker on the Qui Nhon side of the hill inside the fence near the EE with a guy named Ralph, don't recall his last name, who had a hand grenade with his name on it. He kept freaking me out by telling me he could see VC inside the fence by the EE and he kept yelling at them. It was very foggy and creepy at night so I couldn't tell if he was right or out of his head. Finally someone in a jeep came up and took him away. I think the guys in bunker 13 called the officer of the guard on him. I never saw him again.
Billie were you in the Barracks next to the new showers that was hit by ChiCom grenages? Sorry you were injured and had to be taken off the hill. We had a few others injured but fortunately no one in Long Lines was Killed that night. I went into that barracks right after the attack, it was a mess.
I was looking forward to taking a nice hot shower in our new showers, but they were messed up too.
Ted I had just arrived in mid May of 68 so we probably didn't get to spend much time together. I'm not sure if I remember your face. But we probably talked a time or two.
Take care gents. We will talk later.
