My Dad was in the 24th Infantry in the mid 1960s. Does anyone know anything about a shoulder patch? It says (HIGH TANK BATTALION TABLE VIII 1966).
Any info would be appreciated. Thanks. |

It probably means that his tank fired the best score in his battalion on tank table 8. This is a gunnery range that tankers do occasionally. A tread head could tell you more.

recon3295 could be right but I think it is more likely a Battalion award given by Brigade or Division. Probably Division. Tank Table VIII (Tank Table 8) is the final qualification table for tankers. It is your graduation so to speak. Very important event in the life of a Tanker. My first one was in 1972 but I don't think things changed too much from the mid 60's. Much hard work went into just getting to Table 8 and the crews took great pride in their scores. Crews were ranked within their Company, and Battalion. Platoon's fought for high score in the Company and Company's fought for high score in the Battalion. Battalions fought it out for Brigade bragging rights. Alot of money changed hands between Tank Commanders outside the score/debriefing tent. I don't think the patch would have been worn on the shoulder. It most likely was worn on the front of the Field Jacket or even a Tanker Jacket. 1966 was a little before me (6yrs) but I think they still wore their Division Patch on the shoulder. Hope I helped you a little.

My friend commanded a Medium Tank (M-60) Company of a 70th Armor Battalion in 24th ID in the mid-60s. In his unit tank crews with superior range scores were authorized to wear Tanker Jackets & Tanker Boots. Unfortunately, he didn't mention the patch you described.

Thank you for the information. I have some pics of it. If I can figure out how to post them. I do know that he qualified Expert Tank Weapons.

If he was in the 24th INF it's a red taro leaf on a green background. If it had writting on it, it was locally produced by the unit.
