I am trying to go for tanker.I have all my paperwork submitted and I am waiting on a waiver so I can go do the contract. What should I look for in the contract as far as money schooling and I have also seen that there is extra schooling for m1a1 training what is the code for that.I don't want to end up in a stryker unit.
I am hoping to leave soon.I should also have my waiver paperwork this week.

The only way to get out of going Stryker is to get a choice of duty station that does not have them; Ft. Hood, TX. As for a bonus dont expect much, we get little love. If you want to me a Tanker, be a Tanker. The moeny and schools and training will all happen once you are in Iraq. And yes you will go to Iraq.

You can tank or.................

Get a real contract and go EOD. Want to get paid like you're actually worth something? Because you are, when you're EOD. But however if you want to tank ask for Hood. Because tanking is infact the best job in the Army.

I dont think there are many tank battles going on in Iraq and Afghanistan anyway. Tankers always get screwed into doing jobs they dont want to do.

We spent about 50% of our time on our tanks. About 40% in gun trucks and the rest on foot. But thats what to expect when attached to the 82nd ABN. You will get plenty of tank time. You will start out as a driver or a loader and you will always be doing maintenance. Personally I enjoyed being in the truck more than the tank while deployed. Maintenace was easier, we could manuever better and we had A/C. The down side. IED's hurt alot more than when I got hit in the tank.

Cheap labor first, Soldier second.

Really? That's funny because last I knew as a TC of a tank the first postion you do is driver. You're basing this ultimate knowledge of tanks on what experience exactlly?

It all depends on where they go for a duty station) (example if they go to Knox then no they won’t be on a tank and that is a sure thing BTW) If they go to say Hood, there is a 50-50 chance because it will depend on what their units composition is for deployment.. Some units are taking tanks there. Out of a battalion they took one company of tanks. So there is no guarantee that you will be on one but there is none that you won't either.

Not a crack on the Drill Sergeant corps, well maybe it is but either way. Drill Sergeants and Recruiters arent exactly reliable sources of information for stuff like that. The best way is to get on the phone and the internet doing research and getting answers to your questions yourself. Both DS and Recruiters leave the Army and get on the training loop for a couple years. 2 or 3 I think. Alot in the Army changes in a couple months, in a year more so. So keep that in mind when asking them for up to date info.

Your first position is either Loader, or Driver. The real progression is supposed to be loader then driver, but I know many people start as drivers. In my case, I started as a loader (a damn good one), and then became a Gunner. I was the lowest ranked (E-3) Gunner in my Battalion.

The position you start in on the Tank is generally up to the TC. I've had crewmen who couldn't drive as good as they could load or load as good as they could drive. I've also had to move a SGT Gunner to the drivers hole and move my drive to the gunner's seat because my gunner could hit dirt. The guy who posted that it depends on what unit you go to and what configuration what MTOE they will deploy under will determine if you tank, ride gun trucks, or walk or little of all, is correct.

What unit are you with? My son is a 19K10 and will be eligible for reassignment in September. He's looking for someplace he can go where he can do the job he was trained for.
