Do you have to be a NCO or an officer to wear one, or is it anyone, cause I see mostly NCO's wearing them, but I saw a PFC wear one once. Are they given after OSUT? Whats the rule behind them?
I dont know about how they are authorized or issued (I doubt they are issued though). I do know that different units have their own SOPs i.e. 2nd ACR might have a different SOP that 1st Cav, 11th ACT etc.
You just have to be assigned into a Cav unit. 3rd ACR or 1st CAV. 2nd ACR doesn't exist anymore. There's only one ACR left and REMEMBER that. Doesn't matter if your not scout or tankers. You can get your stetson set up for around $90. Plus they have diffrent color cords depending on branch you put on your stetson.
Can Cav Scouts wear the stetson all the time. I am prior service E-4 going back as E-3. I hope to be a cav scout or assigned to stryker unit. Do you recommend cav scout or some other MOS. What to mounted an on the move. Thanks for all info. I am going to MEPS in the AM for the TAPE/weigh in. Already passed all else.

3rd ACR and 11th ACR would be the two active duty regiments left. There are reserve component cavalry regiments as well.
11th, constituted in 1901 no longer officially wears the black stetson but a brown campaign hat that was in service at the time of the regiment's creation in Virginia.
I did a convoy security mission in Iraq with the 11th ACR. We found it ironic that the first casualty suffered by the 11th was a soldier by the name of Gibbs who was killed by islamic insurgents in the Phillipines while riding (convoy) security on a wagon train. Our gunner's name was Gibbs too. That used to mess with his head.
Stetson rules vary alot by unit SOP. Im in 1st CAV we wear ours on fridays along with spurs. Im pretty sure everyone can have one if your in a CAV unit but I see the same thing, mostly senior NCOs and officers. Vary rarely do EMs have them but it is permitted
