C Trp, 1/2ACR Bindlach 1974-75

Dad served HHC, 1/2ACR Bindlach 1953-55

Here we both are in Bayreuth, 1954, with my first Cavalry mount I had just received for my first birthday. The lady in the background is Mrs. Stan Sheridan. Her husband would later become a Lieutenant General.

We lived in a three story house across from the Wagner Opera House.

This is mom and I in front of the Officer's Club in Bayreuth.

Dad won a shooting competition with the German Police in Pegnitz, and this is the plaque he won. The target was a replica of this plaque, and the red arrows show where the hits were marked from the actual target.

The German shooting clubs still use these in competitions. Some of them are excellant works of art and very expensive. This one is a damn fine trophy.

I was there 1954-55 with my dad, then again in 1974-75 on my own. The year on my own was pretty much spent in the border camps or in the field. What few gast haus' I was in, I don't remember leaving. Got jumped shortly before coming home in a bar that was underground. Guy sucker-punched me with one of those 1 litre crystal mugs right in my eye when I was on the way to the head. Some of his buddies, all of us GI's, grabbed me when I didn't go down, and I had to do some quick talking to get them to let me go. As I'm standing in the head, the same guy comes busting in with a broken champagne glass in his hand and tries to stab me in the back. I caught him in the temple with a spinning elbow and he crumpled right on top of the champagne glass, stabbing himself in the chest. About then this huge German comes busting through the crowd that had formed at the door, and snatches me up by my throat. He was about to put my lights out when I hear a female voice rattling off German a mile-a-minute. He puts me down, grabs the guy on the floor by the rear of his pant cuffs, and drags him face down through the bar and up the stairs to the street level, leaving him unconcious in the street. Then he comes back and gets me, puts me behind the bar with a bottle of Cognac and a bar towel soaked in the same for my split eye, and stands guard over me the rest of the night, as he was the club bouncer. Not a clue how I got back to the Rock!

I see you were in the 4th Cav also. My dad served in the 4th Constabulary Regt (4th Cavalry) in Austria during occupation duty after WW II, and with the 2nd Cavalry in Germany after coming home from the Korean War.

Dh was in 2/2 acr I believe in the late '80's. He just reenlisted. PFC David Howery. We are trying to get him back to his old unit. He is currently in AIT Ft. Knox. His orders say texas...is there anyone I can contact to get him back to 2/2? That is his dream to be part of that unit again. Any help is appreciated.
