Hey, Im 26 and Im in ROTC as an MSIII, I really wanted to join armor, but read somewhere that there is a height limit of 6'1... Im 6'7, does this mean I couldn't commission as a armor officer? If I do will my options be limited?
A long time ago when the M1 tank first came out there was a concern about the driver and the ability to close the hatch where he could still drive the tank comfortably. I think that is where this stemmed from originally.
I don't remember it being an issue in the 1980's and I read on this website they got strict with the limitation in the Clinton 1990's.....some of those guys are still in uniform.
If your a Platoon Leader, I can't see how it would be a problem for you as the limit was intended for Enlisted. I only served as Mech Anti-Armor Infantry so I am telling you what I know from that perspective of working with M1 Tankers as OPFOR for engagement.
Someone else can correct me if I am mistaken in any of this.
The other part of the early M1's thats rarely discussed these days is they initially designed the drivers seat so comfortable that they had a problem with drivers falling asleep at the wheel while the tank was moving. Hopefully they addressed that issue.
One more thing if you persue this branch. Spend some time with a Infantry anti-armor section. Some of the best training you can get as a Armor Officer, IMO.
I dunno about officers, but I tried to enlist as a 19K (tanker) and I was told that I couldn't because I was too tall...I'm only 6'2"...I realized I had probably been fed a bunch of bull**** later on, when I met a tanker here in korea who is 6'6"

Yeah I know on this website I keep reading about the height restriction over and over again and it's humorous probably the same Recruiters that never held gainful Civilian salaried employment advising on what MOS will get you a good Civilian job (hint: almost none of the Army MOS' prepare you for a Civilian Job).
BTW, I was 6 foot 5 no problem for the Army on cramming me into a Bradley or M113 or ITV (which is really crampt in places.
It's not a problem. As an officer you will be in the TC's seat which is adjustable. I was 6' 4" and did both M-60's and M-1's. I'm not going to say it is comfortable in a tank being a big guy but it is doable.
Armor is a great branch. Make sure however you learn how to work with the infantry. That is key.
I am 6'2" and went armor, I was just that much more uncomfortable. I would not suggest branching armor if you are 6'7", as just keeping your dome in the turret will be a daunting task, plus getting in/out will be tough. I can barely slide my shoulders through the TC hatch at 6'2", nevermind doing it with body armor on.
