My experience of the Shriners,
A member of a San Diego lodge and Shrine, had a chance to have his son in-law, to be the manager of the Shriners campground on Mount Laguna. He started making changes, and those changes started to get more Masons to come up and enjoy the camp ground. There was a major fire threat, and he had fixed things and created a volunteer Fire Department, and he had kids, and he was trying to attract parent and grandparent to bring more kids up, this rubbed two Shriners raw. The manager submitted petition to his Father in-laws lodge. One of the Shiners went to his lodge and found out that one of his brothers was also a member of the other lodge, the Shiner convinced the Brother to blackball the manager. So the brother shows up to lodge (hadn't been to a meeting in two years) and cubes the guy. I opted not to join the Shrine.

I crossed the Hot Sands, and joined Kena Shrine Center in Fairfax, VA in 1987. I transferred around, and moved my membership to Rizpah (Madisonville KY), Aladdin (Columbus OH), Kazim (Roanoke VA), and Khedive (Norfolk VA).

I demitted the Shrine, when I transferred overseas. When I return to the USA, I intend to get back into the Shrine, and be very active.

Gunner, sorry to hear about your experience with the Shrine. It saddens me to hear such news. I do not understand why some have a dislike for some the bodies involved with Freemasonry. Guess that is just the way that some people are going to be.

I crossed the Hot Sands in 2006 and am a proud member of ACCA (Richmond, VA) and their Legion of Honor. My family have been in the Shrine for as long as I can remember.

Gunner, I'm sorry that you had a bad experience and I would certainly feel the same if I were in your shoes.

Charles,
How do you expect to join the Shrine if you accept your punishment? Have you thought about asking the GL of NY to talk to the GL of KY?

The situation is a bit complicated. No charges have been filed, and the investigation is still on-going. I may get reprimanded, or suspended, or some less than expelled. NY is required to accept any thing that Ky decides, since these two grand lodges are in communications. The GMs of both KY and NY are on a first-name basis already.

Masons in several other states have stepped forward, and offered to sponsor my application for their lodges.

So, although I may be out of KY Masonry, I am certainly not done with Masonry, and I still will be able to participate in the Shrine. I am not returning to the USA for 3-5 years (depending on how this contract plays out), by 2010, the whole incident may be forgotten, and all states will have fraternal relations with PH masonry.
