I will be initiated in the lodge as an EA on Tues 11 Dec.
When I told my mother that I petitioned the lodge, she was overjoyed and gave me my dad's masonic ring ( he is deceased), which was also my grandfathers masonic ring. When can I wear it ? Do I have to be a Master Mason, or can I wear it as an EA ? |

Good question and here is some food for thought. First, upon initiation as an EA, you are made a Mason. However, you are not a Master Mason until raised as such during conferral as the MM degree. The decision is yours, however, if you are observed by a Freemason who is either a Master Mason or Past Master he will notice the Masonic ring and he might examine you, he will quickly know that you are not a Master Mason and treat you as such and you will have some explaining to do which you might not like, or feel you deserve. More than likely nothing will happen, but Masons are usually and generally very loyal and dedicated individuals who are very protective of the fraternity of Free and Accepted Masons. Given this, the choice is yours to make, but I would suggest not wearing a Masonic ring until you become a Master Mason because I know of EA's who never completed their degreework and the my lodge has since dropped them from the lodge rolls and they are now suspended and expelled persons. While I commend you for your enthusiam and congratulate you for wanting to become a Mason, wearing a Masonic ring will mean more to you after you become a Master Mason and you will soon find out why. I will stop there. Congratulations, and tell us all how you feel after you become a Mason. Again, the choice is your to make and if your are unsure, ask some well informed brethren of your soon to be lodge their thoughts and go with their suggestions. As far as I know it varies from jursidiction to jurisdiction. In what state will you be initiated? In Texas, our Entered Apprentice and Fellowcraft brethren cannot wear Masonic jewlery, clothing, or even have Masonic emblems on their vehicles untill they are raised to the degree of a Master Mason. You whould be given some intstruction on all the formalities and traditions of Masonry on the night of your initiation. Good luck on Tuesday night. Keep your ears open and enjoy your first steps on your journey. ~CHRIS |

I join with the others, in congratulating you. The Entered Apprentice is the first time in the tyled lodge, and your first step in the Gentle Craft. I wish you every possible success.
As to wearing Masonic jewelry, it varies from state to state. In Kentucky, it is "taboo" for anyone to wear masonic jewelry, until the individual has completed the Master Mason degree. I suggest that you ask around, when you get to the lodge for your degree. You will, probably be advised to refrain from wearing any jewelry, until you have completed the MM. I inherited my Grandfather's ring, and I wrote a story about it for a Masonic magazine. Please visit this link: http://www.srmason-sj.org/council/journal/dec99/martin.html |

In California you wear it when you know what it all means, and you won't find that out until you've become a 3rd degree. Oh and I got a new ring on Saturday, it's called a Past Master ring.

When I told my mother that I petitioned the lodge, she was overjoyed and gave me my dad's masonic ring ( he is deceased), which was also my grandfathers masonic ring. First I would like to say that you will be joining a faternity where you will be hard pressed to find a corner of this world where you will be without a brother nearby. There are Free Masons living in just about every land and of every religion I now live in Kuwait because of my business and have even found someKuwaiti who are Masons. Being from Texas the question has already been answerd for me there. I know in most if not all juristdictions until you are raised you should not wear your ring,to be 100% sure ask your Lodge. Becauseuntil you are a Master Mason you are not a full member of any lodge and can be stopped from becoming one should you violate their trust. If you look on the Welcome thread you will find an epic that I wrote the day of my rasing I read it then and again in an open lodge with many non mason visiters present it in no way violates the precepts Of Masonry However My Grand children all wear a Masonic pendent that was designed by a Past Grand Master of Texas specificly for children and grand Children of Texas Masons. Thanks for all of the advice. I was initiated tonight and it was a pretty awesome experience. They told us all after initiation not to wear Masonic jewelry,or diplay the masonic symbol until getting our MM degree.I am so looking forward to my journey and am proud to be a new brother.

Learn your esoteric work well when your instructor thinks that you are ready ask him if he feels that you would be ready to examine your self after all if you know the answers you know the questions You will find that in later years you will be glad that you did. Also your payment for your instructor training you and helping you to learn your work will be to pass those instructions on to others, If you chose to eximine your self after passing the profiency in the EA degree then being passe to the fellow craft Degree you may be asked if you would like to help instruct a new Entered aprentice in his work you may do so but remember you will be learning the work in the second degree as well during that time I recomend doing everything that you are capible of doing. 2 weeks after I was raised I eximined myself in the Masters degree afterwards that very night I confered my first Ea degree. Most enjoyable thing that I have ever done in my life It made me so proud to see my former instructor sitting there with that big smile on his face if I work in a thousand degrees or become Past Master of a hundred Lodges or even should I become a Grand Master I will never be able to repay all that, that Brother did for me during those first 3 months of my Masonic life. WB Jason I'll post in my profile on the other site. I have my Past Masters Apron, and I'm getting ready to go to New York for a couple of weeks and wear it in Lodge there. Congratulations on your new title PM. Bryan |

Wait until you have been raised a Master Mason before you wear the ring. You will know then, how to wear it. The ring has on it the sign of a Master Mason and it would be inappropriate for an Entered Apprentice or a Fellow Craft Mason to wear one.

Thats a very good thought. I have been told much the same thing. DON"T wear the ring till you are raised. I took my vows ( FOR want OF A Better word) using my late brothers Masonic Bible. When I was raised I put his old ring on. |

Hello gmcneil,
I read about that you wanted to wear your fathers ring. It is a great gesture to wear it. Buy now you must be a raised MM. Good luck on your new adventure! Terry TCT has a point and I agree wih him. I gave a masonic ring to a newly raised Brother. He came from California and he was proud of what I did. |

Hey pjmnl,
I will be raised to a MM next Sat ( Mar 1st). I am very excited and look so forward to wearing my fathers ring. That ring was originally my grandfathers so I will be the 3rd generation MM wearing it. It will always hold a lot of sentimental value to me.My mentor told me that a lot of masons wear rings that were passed down to them. |
